Disclaimer I'm not much of an outdoors person, but I'm also partial to Avery books so I think that balances out. It's okay if you disagree. That out of the way, on to talking about this book.
For starters the watercolors are nice and the narrative is too. No surprise on either front (at least not for me because like I said this isn't my first time with something of hers) but also as usual there are a few times that the rhymes are off like: “Listen to the birds, the breeze. The rustle of the trees so excited. All nature is calling. We've been invited.” Yes it doesn't read exactly the same when written out in a paragraph versus the story but I tweaked the punctuation to illustrate the point: breeze and trees rhyme as do excited and invited, however it doesn't show as well when it's like that instead of: “Listen to the birds, the breeze. The rustle of the trees. So excited. All nature is calling. We've been invited.” Here I separate by a period while in the book it would probably be a line change. One that wasn't here. And sure that might be nitpicky of me but I just don't see why that line couldn't have been there when the other pages did it.
That aside, my only other issue with this book is the questionable advice of stepping outdoors and exploring (which to a child's ears might not sound like camping or going with adult supervision) however I also have to point out that this is probably going to be read to a child so it's really that readers responsibility to point that out. It's also true that the pictures allude to not going alone which I approve of so I can't completely call it a con. Maybe a questionable pro?
However, there's also good advice like: “Just remember to be kind to them all. Be careful not to disturb and always respect.” That refers to what you might find while outdoors and that's an incredibly good point to make. So overall this story is cute and certainly teaches a few good lessons and/or gives good starting points to teach good lessons however for the reasons I've given, along with that I just like other books from this author better my final rating is 3 stars. I'd recommend it if a child's specific circumstances (say they're going on a camping trip) would mean they could benefit from this tale but otherwise this is more a forgettable cute.

"A rollicking rhyme to deliver a message encouraging kids to exchange indoor activities for outdoor pleasures ... Adults who want to encourage kids to view indoor and outdoor play differently finally have a picture book that contrasts the two, supporting the notion of moving, discovering, and exploring nature. The focus on listening, looking, and experiencing leaves nothing to wonder and gives adults rudimentary clues for helping youngsters interact with, observe, and appreciate their outdoors world as much as their indoors one. ... Highly recommended for parents, preschool teachers, childcare providers, and anyone who would foster an early appreciation of nature in the very young." --D. Donovan, Senior Reviewer, Midwest Book Review
"The perfect antidote to long summer days with bored children ... Find new discoveries and experiences ... One of the book's central messages to its young readers: slow down, take the time to really explore, and you will be rewarded with hidden treasures." --The Bookbag
"Avery invites her readers to put down all those gadgets and indoor activities and take a few steps outside to see, hear and feel all that nature has to offer ... An essential book for getting the young ones (and some of the older ones) motivated to be at one with nature again." --Readers' Favorite
"Children's imaginations will light up ... Not only a book for kids ... What Wonders Await Outdoors reminds everyone to take time for exploration, adventure, and play ... a story about courage and curiosity ... a book about compassion and acceptance ... fun and inspiring." --Entrada Publishing
"Bring out the 'adventurer' in every child ... Remind children of all the 'good' things in the world. And most of the good things in the world don't happen on a tiny screen ... Grow by exploring, by trying new things - BY SEEING THE WORLD!" --Wishing Shelf Book Review
"An absolutely visually beautiful book ... Easily relates to the child's experiences when out and about ... Encourages families to explore and embrace the natural world around us ... The watercolour illustrations are so unusual - busy, lively and modern - and capture the positive joy and pleasure to be had in spending time outdoors." --LoveReading4Kids

About the Author
Justine Avery is an award-winning author who loves writing stories for all sorts of readers. She was born in America but grew up-and is still growing up-all over the world as a natural explorer with a curiosity for all things. She's jumped out of airplanes, off of very high bridges, and into shark-infested waters-to name a few adventures. And books are her favorite adventures of all.
"[Avery's] own energetic wonder of what the world can hold for you if you choose to seek it out shines through." --The Children's Book Review
"We're big fans of Justine Avery here at Bookbag Towers. She doesn't overtax the young readers she's creating for and she always puts out a positive message. ... As with all Avery's books for sharing, the text is ... accessible and rhythmic, optimistic, full of sunshine. I defy any parent child combo to come away without a smile on their faces and with a renewed desire to find as many books and stories to enjoy as the day can hold. ... It is always a pleasure to review a new book by Justine Avery." --The Bookbag
"Perfectly timed. This is something that Justine Avery excels at in her writing; she manages to get the sentiment across with the perfect blend of humor ... Avery connects with her readers ... Avery brings her love for life and adventure to her stories." --Entrada Publishing
"Comic timing is everything ... and, I'm happy to say, Justine Avery is excellent at it. ... The words she picks flow; there's rhythm here that adds flavor to the story." --The Wishing Shelf Review
"Unexpectedly touching and insightful phrases showing that Avery puts her young audience before the act of simply blurting out a story children might like ... [Avery] has a heart for children and knows they love surprises." --Tammy Ruggles for Readers' Favorite
"The narration of [Justine Avery] is wonderfully earnest to such a degree that there's this unique element of comfort that pervades each and every page." --Erin Nicole Cochran for Readers' Favorite

Nature is calling you to have some fun outdoors.
What will you find?
Where will you be able to explore?
They’re birds & animals to see.
Water & trees to admire.
The core message of exchanging indoor activities for the adventure of the great outdoors drives the rhyming narrative, a journey of imagination and discovery mixing fantasy with reality in brilliant watercolor landscapes.
I do not receive any type of compensation for reading & reviewing free books from publishers & authors. Therefore, I am under no obligation to write a positive review, only an honest one.
An awesome book cover, great hand-drawn colored pictures, charming illustrations & proper font & writing style. A very professionally written children’s (preschool/elementary; age) rhyming storybook. It was quite easy for me to read/follow from start/finish & never a dull moment. There were no grammar/typo errors, nor any repetitive or out of line sequence sentences. Lots of exciting scenarios, with several twists/turns & a great set of unique characters, settings, etc. to keep track of. This could also make another great children’s educational presentation (outdoors), movie, an animated cartoon, or better yet a mini TV series. There is no doubt in my mind this is an extremely easy rating of 5 stars.

The concept behind this book is a wonderful idea, which is what interested me in it in the first place, but sadly, it falls far short of my expectations. From the description, it sounded like it would be a delightful learning experience for toddlers and pre-schoolers who would be introduced to observing nature more closely to find the wonders outside. But the rhyming seemed to be more important to the author than the actual content, and the illustrations, while whimsical would not make much sense to very small children who are learning about real life at an astronomical pace in real life and do not have the interpretive skills needed to figure out what these very unrealistic blobby shapes are. If the book is intended for older children with some of those interpretive skills, there would be no need for the introduction to ‘outside.’ They would need much more in-depth content. Younger children also need more rhythm in the rhymes, because it helps their developing brains. And as an intro to ‘outside’ there ought to be more specifics and less generality in the content, rather than leaving so much up for interpretation. I doubt that really young children would have a clue what this book is about. Older children might find it fun but are certainly not needing to be introduced to going outside. It makes it sound as if the parent in this book had never let her kids outside before.

Right now the world has been told to more or less stay inside and for good reason. My family is lucky enough to have a back yard that we can let our toddler explore. And with a book like this, that small yard has become a much more magical place.
I'm a big fan of Avery's writing and this book is a great example as to why. She doesn't use a simple rhythm in her writing which means I have to be on my toes when I read it out loud to my son. This keeps him more engaged as well so he ends up understanding more of the story. In the case of this book Avery talks about all the magical things that can be found outside (like tiny communities of animals high in the trees and low to the ground). I know my son and I can already tell that he's going to be exploring high and low in our yard as soon as I read this to him tomorrow.
It's an adorable book with absolutely gorgeous watercolor illustrations. And, as with any of Avery's books, I strongly recommend it to anyone who plans on reading to little ones!

What wonders await outdoors
Justine Avery & Liuba Syrotiuk
What wonders await outdoors is a beautifully illustrated children's book. The illustrations are really colourful and I can't resist turning the pages often just to take a glimpse of them.
I believe it's mandatory to keep the inner child in us alive to celebrate this journey of life. If you believe childrens book are only for children, trust me you will be missing out on many beautiful books like this.
The book was a simple read, illustrating a Mother trying to take out two kids to fight off boredom after staying indoors and their day exploring outdoors is the book with rhyming words meant purely for fun,no moral or lessons to kids just a simple colorful day out.
Even though the book is meant to be simple and for kids, few felt pages too deep and philosophical. Its all about what we see, right?

Colourful, but not exciting - I expected more!
Reviewed in Canada on September 23, 2020Verified Purchase
Colourful and pleasant child's read, but I felt it was missing a lot of the excitement that children often need when reading a book. Perhaps it misses something when read from an ebook, but I must say that this book disappointed me when I read it. I expected more.
