How to Use Fatwood Firestarter
Fireplace - Step 1
Place 2-3 sticks criss-crossed on a grate so that the flame will move up the stick.
Fireplace - Step 2
Place seasoned split firewood on top of the Fatwood sticks, leaving room between the Fatwood and firewood for airflow. Light one end of each Fatwood stick. Replace your fireplace screen then sit back and enjoy!
Charcoal Grill - Step 1
Arrange charcoal to form a pyramid. Insert 2-3 sticks of Fatwood throughout so that the ends stick out 1 to 2 inches from the charcoal.
Charcoal Grill - Step 2
Light the ends of the Fatwood sticks and leave grill uncovered for 10-15 minutes. When coals are ashed over and Fatwood sticks have completely burned out, it is safe to start cooking.

It really only takes a few sticks to start the fire in our wood burning stove. I love how this company obtains their product, as well as re-planting trees for sustainability.
All it takes is a match, or a long lighter to get these sticks burning. All of my sticks have been dry, so I can't comment on lighting them while they are damp.
My uses are restricted to keeping a stick or two in my camping bag, (the size of a single stick is like a bundle of four pencils) and as an alternative to lighter fluid to get some classic charcoal burning for a BBQ. I'll take a knife to split them down to smaller pencil sized pieces, then spread them out on the charcoal, or you can put a peice or two beneath the coals if there's an open area. Light them up and they'll blaze agressively and long enough to finally start those coals to burn in their own. No more squirting lighter fluid on them twenty times and relighting, or using the "Matchlight", easy-to-light charcoal briquettes that turn to ash and are done glowing in under an hour. Anyway, fat wood is a great application for that, or any other where you need to get a stubborn fire going.
As an added bonus, you'll love that moment when you open the box and the scent of a pine forest hits your nose and puts a smile on your face :)
The problem I had with this particular Amazon order was the box. The top was glued shut but at some point a bottom flap must have opened and the box only had half the fat wood left. I weighed the box and it was only six pounds. The box was in another when shipped from Amazon so at some point previous to that it had dumped half the contents out the bottom and someone kept it in inventory anyway. I would be hesitant about buying this item again as receiving half the contents in a poorly sealed box (five pounds instead of ten) is not a very good deal at this price. Again, no problem with the fat wood itself, just receiving the box with half its contents from Amazon.
I live on an island in Alaska, and use a wood burning fireplace to supplement the heat in my house. While I don't have to keep the fireplace going to stay warm, I really like the ambiance of a fire going in the evening. I've usually got at least a cord and a half of wood on hand at any time. While its not green, it may not be as dry as it ideally would be. It usually takes 2-3 of the round style compressed wood/wax fire starters that come in an 8 pack to get a wet batch of wood started. These small kindling size pieces are loaded and glistening with sticky sap! I was able to get a single piece on fire with only a couple seconds of flame from a lighter! The fact that this was delivered with free shipping 3 full days before the estimated delivery date was outstanding! I think I will definitely be ordering this 50# box again.

Tried them. These things create more black smoke than any other product I've used.
