The item is cheaply built, but it's also cheap in price.. so I think it's worth it. The beads are a little sticky because of the finish on the wood. I wonder if there's a way to clean it so that's not an issue. I think this abacus is ok if you're getting it to just learn the Chinese abacus. But I just find it a little frustrating because abacus beads should move freely. I much prefer my Japanese soroban... but then again, I paid a lot more for that.

I think the abacus / soroban is a great teaching tool for kids learning math - I highly recommend starting your kids on it. Once mastered it makes the basic operations a cinch. I also believe it helps children to understand numbers better. Some schools in Japan still teach the Soroban and if you look them up on youtube, the math feats they can do are simply amazing.

I wanted to send for the least expensive abacus for the only purpose of learnig how to use one. For such a low price I was expecting the abacus to be flimsy and poorly finished. I ws pleasantly surprised to see it was carefully assembled, the wood is finished nicely and the hardware is all brass. It's now my favorite desk ornament.

Ancient technology that is still useful in today's world. No batteries required, no screen to break, no lights required. Just as fast as a calculator in the right hands. Great way for children to begin to learn math.

I have no idea what a good abacus should look and feel like, but this would appear to be a good value. The abacus is sitting on a shelf full of my wife's random "cool-looking" stuff from Pottery Barn in my living room, where it fits in pretty well, although hopefully I'll learn to use it.

this is nothing fancy, but if you want a traditionally one for a great price, this is the one to get. I like the 2 beads on top for the option of counting with 16 base numbers, like original abacus Chinese based

This product meets my requirements. I love it! Children can learn mathematics efficiency! Although it is little coarse, it works.

As other reviewers have said, this abacus is cheaply made. The metal hardware appears to brace the corners is very thin and of low quality, and seems primarily decorative. It probably isn't adding anything to the unit's structural integrity. The frame is finished only on the outside and the front. It looks like it was probably fully assembled and then someone came along with a brush and painted finish on the parts he could get to easily without turning it over. There's a noticeable smell to the finish as well, which I'm assuming will fade over time. There's a lot of friction between the beads and the rods, but not so much that you can't move the beads with a finger. The beads themselves have noticeable imperfections, minor gouges and scratches on them. It doesn't look like the construction is very sturdy.

This is a low-end product.

That said, it does work fine for someone of my low skill level. I'm not a fast abacus user, so the fact that the beads have a bit of drag on them is not really a problem for me. The abacus does look fairly nice, and the photos are a fair representation of its appearance. And the price is very low. For someone like me, who wants an abacus to play around with, it's probably a good choice. If you are an experienced abacus user, then you probably don't need me to tell you to look elsewhere for a good quality unit.

As a teen I learned to use an abacus from a shop owner in San Francisco's China Town, and got so fast with it I still use it. My old one is getting fragile. Not just a toy, a great teacher.
