Temple Bells - Quintet, Copper
Inspired by ancient Chinese bells, this bell offers a restful tone.
Bells have been used throughout the ages to accompany dance, to provide comfort and to warn of possible danger. The Chinese were the first to control the pitch or note of a bell, making it possible for them to play tunes. Soon bells were being used to accompany worship. On New Year's Eve the bells in Buddhist temples are rung 108 times, once for each of the 108 worldly desires.
- In the East bells have become very important and are often decorated with significant symbols.
- For centuries, tuned bells have been suspended in homes and temples to ward off evil and attract good luck and prosperity.
- Woodstock Temple Bells are inspired by these ancient bells and work in harmony with the wind to create gentle, soothing tones.
- 32 in. Overall Length
- 5 antiqued copper-plated steel bells and windcatcher
It All Started With an Aluminum Lawn Chair...
In 1979, Grammy Award-winning musician and instrument designer Garry Kvistad created the first Woodstock Chime from an aluminum lawn chair he found in a landfill. Fascinated by the Scale of Olympos, a 7th century pentatonic scale that can’t be played on a modern piano, Garry cut and tuned the lawn chair tubes to the exact frequency of the ancient scale. The resulting Chimes of Olympos was the first Woodstock Chime and is still one of their more popular musically-tuned windchimes. Garry and his wife Diane still develop the chimes today as part of their family-owned business in New York’s Hudson Valley.

Garry and his wife Diane founded Woodstock Percussion, in 1979 and it remains a family-owned business in New York's Hudson Valley. Grammy award-winning musician Garry Kvistad created the first Woodstock Chime from an aluminum lawn chair he found in a landfill. As a professional musician and instrument designer, he was fascinated by the Scales of Olympos, a 7th century pentatonic scale that can't be played on a modern piano. Garry had the idea to cut and tune the lawn chair chime tubes to the exact frequency of the ancient scale. The resulting Chimes of Olympos was the first Woodstock Chime and is still one of our bestselling wind chimes.

I have a better Woodstock chime that I enjoy, but I cheaper out on my second. Serves me right, I guess. DING! DINGLE-ING! DING! Disappointing.
I took a look and figured out two things: The clappers on the top two tiers were hanging too low to make contact on the bell. Once I took the string apart, I also found that the balls - which had a small hole at one end and a smaller hole at the opposite end - had (at least to my mind) been strung upside down with the larger hole facing downward. This allowed the clapper balls to slip too far down the string to make correct contact with the body of the bell.
A few minutes with my fat fingers working on unstringing the tiny knots, then turning the balls to the correct orientation and restringing/reknotting them and all was good to go. The chime makes a beautiful sound and and all is well.

At first, they produced a very relaxing sound and were very beautiful.
However, after having these in the garden, they have rusted completely; dulling the sound and now lacking the appeal to look at.
Disappointed is an understatement
