Bottom line: I love these balls, find them to have paid for themselves after a week of use, and would make an excellent gift! These were a great purchase and I would happily buy these balls again.
When I first got these I was skeptical. But, I purchased them because I have a new baby coming and with my last child I couldn't use dryer sheets because the heavy chemicals broke her skin out in rashes. If that's what it's doing to fresh, new skin then maybe I don't want that touching anyone's skin! So, with a new little one arriving, I started doing some research on fabric softening alternatives. I had heard of the plastic variety of dryer balls, but not about wool. With all the research going on regarding heated plastics emitting dangerous chemicals, I knew I didn't want the possibility of THAT leaching into my laundry and my families skin. I wanted something all natural. As I said I was skeptical especially since I have a bit of a wool allergy. Nothing too serious; I just can't wear 100% wool against my skin or I break out in a rash. Luckily, I've used these in my dryer for a full month and no one in my family has had an adverse reaction.
My clothes come out just as soft as when I used chemical laden dryer sheets. Another bonus is being able to dry my towels with other clothes. Quite some time ago I read that fabric softener and dryer sheets absorb into towels and lessen their ability to pick up water. So, I was making my towels less effective by my drying techniques. So, I started making sure I never put my towels in the dryer with anything I used a dryer sheet on. Which, of course, meant I had to dry one more load all by themselves. It was a real pain. Now I don't have to worry about that. Everything gets tossed in the dryer and the dryer balls do their magic without the aid of synthetics or chemicals.
There are only two downsides to these dryer balls. One is, yeah, they're noisy. Not tennis shoes in a dryer noisy. But noisy. That really doesn't bother me though. I don't dry my clothes while I'm trying to sleep. Secondly, I have noticed a bit more static. Nothing a good shake out doesn't cure, but it's there. And that might bug some people. Obviously those things weren't a big deal to me because I still give it a solid 4 stars!

I did not notice any difference in drying times. That seemed to be the same as it's ever been. I did notice that the loads with blankets, sheets, and quilts were more efficient. Normally I would need to go down about halfway through, pull everything out, shake it apart, untwist everything, then continue. With these, I only had to do that with one load of queen size flannel sheets.
The only drawbacks, if they could even be called that, is 1) that I don't want to bring them upstairs with me, I want to remove them from the dryer and keep them there (for the next load or to prevent my cat from chasing them). These balls will get stuck in pants legs, sleeves, hoods, etc. Then when you shake clothing out they pop out and roll away. 2) They don't seem to do much for static build-up, especially in fleece and satin. I'm not sure how to get around that.
To address a couple negatives that others have mentioned- I didn't have a single complaint about the clothes not being softened. Jeans to heavy canvas workpants, all were pliable and comparable to using softeners or dryers sheets, with the added bonus of them not have a slight residual buildup. The other nice thing that maybe few people notice or care about is there were no "clashing of the scents" by using multiple products. If anything, our laundry has a very faint scent from the powdered detergent I use, and that's all. I use white vinegar in the softening cycle (hard water) and I'm really pleased at how efficient and effective these balls were at drying and retaining a nice, clean, scent from the detergent and not much else.
There's a faint thumping sound as these bounce around in the dryer but I honestly had to listen for it, it's not loud or obnoxious at all. Actually, that was how I knew I needed to go shake out the sheets that got a bit twisted.
I used all six for a full large capacity dryer or a couple blankets, 3-4 for smaller loads or loads with lots of small items (socks).
The white bag they come in is cute, but not practical. I sat a basket on the dryer and just drop these in after retrieving them.
After more than 16 loads of laundry there is no noticeable change in size, shape, or color.
Size is slightly smaller than a tennis ball, color is a natural cream color. They flex a little when damp but are back to normal by the time they are done.
I don't think adding a couple drops of essential oil to these would be a good idea since they are so dense, but if you wanted to add a scent just add some drops to a clean, damp cloth. If the static continues to be an issue I might line dry those items with a 5 minute round in the dryer.
Get you some, these things are awesome.
UPDATE
We've been using these for a couple months now and I have time day I like them more and more each time I use them. They work so well! As another reviewer mentioned, you can overcome any static problems by adding a bank or two of aluminum foil with the dull side out. I tried that on a load of fleece pullovers my husband wanted for wearing at work. Normally, even with two or three standard dryer sheets, this kind of load would be static city. Adding in the aluminum balls, the fleece load was perfect. There were a couple crackles immediately after pulling them out but by the time I was folding them they were static free.
I did try adding essential oil and that was a mistake. For some reason the oil made its way into the heating vent and started putting of the smell of burnt lavender which was very unpleasant. It took almost one month to get rid of that smell. Instead, I added the drops after the clothes were dirty to a damp washcloth, ran them for a couple minutes on cool, and removed everything.
