- ★ MERINO WOOL IS SELF-CLEANING – Wool blankets DO NOT need to be machine washed due to the self-cleaning properties of wool fibers. Machine washing may be damaging to wool. The natural properties of high-quality wool create a durable, flexible, and temperature-regulating Woolly blanket. Spot cleaning and a good shake goes a long way! Woolly Mammoth blankets are built to last and are used by thousands of bushcrafters, hunters, campers, backpackers, hikers, survivalists, & preppers.

As fellow stargazers, wilderness explorers, and earth admirers, we spend all of our free time surrounded by nature. We believe in investing in simple, well-crafted pieces that will last. Whether you are camping under the moonlight, prepping for the apocalypse, bushcrafting in the backcountry, or relaxing next to a crackling bonfire, a Woolly Mammoth wool blanket is a must-have for your outdoor gear collection.
Premium Merino Wool: The Woolly Mammoth Difference
The art of the woven craft runs deep in our lineage. We feel merino sheep yield the best quality of wool fiber for blankets. We do not use any recycled wool.
Merino wool is renewable and sustainable. The fiber length, known as the "staple," is longer and thinner, commonly referred to as the "micron." This composition results in a soft and durable feel.
We are committed to curating a superior textile, which is why we thoughtfully created our merino wool blankets using a twill weave and a milled finish. The twill weave makes soils and stains less noticeable due in part to the subtle diagonal texture. The milled finish creates inter-fiber felting and fabric consolidation, which results in optimal density for rugged outdoor excursions.
Recognizing the importance of detail, we secure our blankets' edging with a double-stitched overseam using thick polyester thread and a classic yarn whipstitch for a timeless and polished look.
Wandering and exploring is where the magic happens. Wherever you find yourself, a Woolly Mammoth merino wool blanket will be a cherished and reliable companion.
Woolly Mammoth Woolen Company
Merino Wool | Rugged, Yet Soft | 66" x 90" | 4 Lbs. | Double-Stitched Edging and a Thick Yarn Whipstitch
Thousands of survivalists, campers, hikers, bushcrafters, and vanlifers depend on Woolly Mammoth blankets.
Our Explorer Collection wool blankets are inspired by everyday outdoor adventures.
The Art of the Weave At 66 inches by 90 inches and weighing approximately 4 pounds, this blanket is woven with 80% premium merino wool, which means we do not use any recycled wool. For enhanced durability, we have added a small amount of acrylic to the warp and weft. We feel that a fiber-blended blanket provides better functionality and enhanced longevity.
Premium Merino Wool Fiber Merino wool is a premium fiber used for knitwear. It is highly regarded for its warmth and softness. We use a long staple that is tightly spun to minimize poking and itching. Our blankets are woven using a twill weave. Soils and stains are less noticeable due in part to the subtle diagonal texture.
Studies show that merino wool can be bent up to 20,000 times before breaking. Wool is a breathable fiber that produces instant warmth. Not only is wool naturally temperature-regulating, but it is also a sustainable resource. Wool has water-resistant qualities and repels moisture vapor through its fibers, thereby making it less susceptible to mold or mildew. Even on sunny days, a quality wool blanket can help protect you from the sun and keep you cool with the fibers' temperature-regulating properties.
Edging & Finish The milled finish creates inter-fiber felting and fabric consolidation, which results in optimal density for rugged outdoor excursions. The edging of this blanket has a double-stitched overseam using thick polyester thread and a classic yarn whipstitch for a timeless and polished finish.
Easy Wool Blanket Care Proper care will result in many years of use from your blanket. The elasticity of wool fiber makes it naturally wrinkle-resistant and prone to holding its shape. There is no need for frequent cleanings. Gently spot-clean as needed and hang dry . Wool’s resilience, low static, and hairy surface help it repel dirt and other elements.
If blankets become heavily soiled, we recommend dry cleaning as the best way to maintain the size, structure, and appearance of your wool blankets.
***Machine washing of woolen blankets can result in noticeable shrinkage, loss of fibers, and loss of fabric smoothness.***

And they were right!
As someone that sleeps in a vehicle, I knew I needed something better than the thin, cotton blankets I have been using, especially with winter practically here already in PA.
I already have a winter of car living under my belt already, and thank God I am here now to talk about it!
But if I could buy a product that would make this 2nd go around more comfortable, the Woolly Mammoth wool blanket is it!
This blanket has helped me fall asleep faster and stay asleep longer because it just keeps my body heat where it needs to be.
The material is of great quality and feels fine on the skin; does not irritate me one bit.
Some reviews mentioned a strong odor but I have not experienced that with mine.
A nice bonus was the care card included, which mentioned if there is a strong smell, to just let it air out. Also included on the care card are instructions how to take care of it, like to dry clean only and not wash, which I was unaware of. The tip about dusting baking soda on the blanket and shaking it out to freshen it up was cool too.
Overall, I am very pleased with the product and the company. I know this will last a while, and when it does come time to replace, if at all, I will definitely get another one of these for sure!
One: DO NOT WASH THIS BLANKET IN THE WASHING MACHINE! If you don’t know how to care for a wool blanket, don’t get mad and leave a sour review when you ruin it. Take 5 minutes and hit up their website and read up on the care. Washing will cause it for shrink and shed. Spot wash as much as you can.
Two: Yes, it smells. It smells just like a wool blanket. When they’re new, that smell is always stronger. As you air the blanket out it will be less pungent, but it’s always there. I used them growing up so I’m used to it, but some people are very sensitive to it to where it smells like some type of fuel. If you notice it but it doesn’t make you gag, let it air out by just spreading it out outside on a dry day, or even in your garage where you can open the door, and it will freshen the wool. I’ve heard of people also rubbing dryer sheets on it after airing it out and it will smell like a newly dried blanket for a long time.
But, It just smells like a wool blanket, so you might want to go sniff a real wool blanket and see if you like the smell before buying a more expensive one like this.
Overall: Just a great wool blanket. It’s softer than some, not as soft as others. Still great and will get used a lot this hunting season.
My favorite feature is the stitching around the edge. It’s about 1/2-1” thick and is super sturdy. The overall quality is definitely 10/10, worth the asking price.
If they’re out of stock here, you can find them at the Wolly Mammoth website. It’s where I got mine when amazon couldn’t deliver. Same price for me at the time too. Worth every penny.
Softness: 7/10 - it’s wool, not necessarily designed for softness in my experience.
Warmth 10/10 - this with my swagman roll makes this dad all toasty and warm.
Comfort 9/10 - it’s a super nice wool blanket of very high quality, but do consider its weight. Wool blankets are heavy in general, and this XL one keeps the tradition going. I may buy the smaller one for camping and keep this one in my FJ.

And I'm not disappointed. It's impressively warm, and it feels sturdy.
I see in the reviews that some people have complained about a smell. If there ever was a problem, it's been resolved. When the blanket first came out of its packaging, there was a trace of a chemical odor which dissipated over a couple of days. Now, the only odour left is the faint odor of lanolin, which is a smell so inoffensive that aromatherapists use lanolin as a base for making creams. I also asked someone else with a better nose that mine to give it a sniff, and she said it was fine.
