So Much Better Than Word

I was introduced to WP long before there was Windows or Word. WP is command rather than mouse driven and far more efficient and elegant.

We use both word and WP in the office only because we need to communicate with other firms. I give our people the choice of using word or WP for internal communications. Over the last decade or so most of the employees came to the company knowing only word. A requirement was that they learn enough WP to be proficient in both.

The outcome is that almost every employee scoffed at WP at first and then learned how elegant it is and in the end adopted it as the word processor of choice. My guess is that the output is 150% - 200% of word. Of equal importance is the vastly reduced probability that the word processing software will suddenly get an overwhelming desire to reformat your document, thus trashing hours of work.

Most of the senior partners at law firms acknowledge that the only converted to Word under duress, clients wanted documents in that format and new employees were raised on Word. Part of the problem is the the DOJ as part of the Microsoft antitrust settlement years ago let them pay their fine by giving free softward to schools . It's like allowing a drug dealer to settle the case by giving free samples to the school kids.

If you frequently work with outlines it's even better. Microsoft's random re-formats can simply trash hours of work. After you go back to the prior save you are still under the threat of the random formatting monster.

If you do a lot of writing and are willing to learn more of the keystroke commands this is a great leap forward. The keystroke commands also reduce wear and tear on the wrist.

WordPerfect - A MUST for Desktop Publishing

This consumer grew up in the WordPerfect era, forced into the computer world by a small business which required more than an IBM Selectric typewriter. Now, after sufficiently dating myself as (very) old school and after enduring years of the business world forcing Microsoft programs down my throat, I finally have my preferred word processing application back on my beloved PC.

WordPerfect is THE perfect program for desktop publishing. I create my own brochures, fliers, post cards, address labels, letterheads, templates and forms with this versatile software. WordPerfect offers an abundant supply of publishing options which are simply not available on competing word processing programs.

Reveal Codes. Other discerning product raters have touted the details of what this fabulous software can do. This writer cannot say enough about the benefits of using the Reveal Codes feature offered in WP. To my knowledge, detailed codes describing exactly what happened in any specific location in the document cannot be found in any other software program. Whether it's a simple letter or a high-end brochure, using Reveal Codes will reveal professionalism in your finished product.

I suggest the new user obtain a quality WordPerfect tutorial to describe the myriad of extended features and how to use them. The user will be amazed with the versatility of this program!

Best Word Processor

I have been using Word Perfect since the Dos 4.1 version.
Have generally purchased the Standard and sometimes the Business office upgrades up through X4.
This home version with 3 licenses is a great value
I have not found anything missing from this version that I have always used in previous versions.
I was able to manually move all my macros and settings from X4 standard to this home X5 version.
Can't recommend it enough.
Just as a point of interest, I don't use WP for pdf conversion. I use Paperport and Foxit PhantomPdf Standard for this.
I also don't have the business need to go back and forth to Microsoft Word so don't know how well it works with those files.
Reveal Codes, ease of customization and ease of use in general makes it a winner for me.

Just an update. I still use wpx5 because I have not found a need to upgrade to wpx6. When I move to windows 8 or even 7 I will have to change. Right now I am using vista and xp and wpx5 is still great. If I come across a windows file it does not handle well I resort to the open source OpenOffice3.3. I rarely have to do this.

As a longtime user of WordPerfect (OK, I've been using it since version 2 when it was published by Satellite Software) I will certainly provide a biased view of the tool. WordPerfect continues to be just that 'word perfect.' It continues to have all the features we have all always loved: reveal codes, simple formating, fit-to-page, legal mode, lots of helpful templates and an interface EVERYONE understands and knows hot to find things. One of the chief complaints with the new Microsoft products is the use of the 'ribbon.' If MS developed the ribbon to mimic the original menu bar, all would have been well. WordPerfect has keep things in the same places so using the product is no a chore, but second nature.

Having moved with WP through the years, indeed there have been many improvements and tweaks from their various owners (after SSI - Novell, and now Corel)the product remains clean and very easy to use. It certainly has all the robust features of Word but includes more. Aside from the two mentioned above, the ability to create Adobe PDF files directly from the product is very handly. WordPerfect also includes the ability to open and edit word processing files from pretty much any other program on and off the market. It can still open WordStar, for example, and open Open WorkOffice files. Neither of which MS Word offers.

So, WordPerfect is still a wonderful tool, available at a low price (purchased this version for just over $50 US, and comes with a presentation program (similar to PowerPoint - again with a simpler interface, great templates) and a speadsheet program (similar to Excel - again with ...)and a slew of other tools - all included in the package. Don't know what you're doing with WordPerfect, they have even included a disk with training tools for all the utilities included. AND all of this for a price about ¼ the cost of the Microsoft product.
