I deducted one star because some of the images were small and blurry on my android phone where I read most of my kindle books. This has not been a problem in most of Dr. Andy's past books and he is looking into it. The other improvement in this book would be an expanded section on security with some specific techniques and plugins recommended. As an old timer with WordPress, I know how important security is. WordPress security could be a book all by itself.
But all in all this is a good beginners guide to setting up and operating a WordPress site.
I like Dr. Andy's approach to SEO better than other writers that I have read. His approach is clean and honest and he encourages people to provide high quality content to reach high search site ranking using SEO. I find his periodic newsletters to be informative and have enjoyed following his "autopsy" of a web site that has recently lost its ranking. I don't think I would call his approach scientific, but it is certainly well thought out and what he says makes sense to me.
I have been a follower of Dr Williams for some years, and have several of his products. He is a reliable source of good information, none of the instant riches stuff, just general good sense and building up steadily to meet your goals.
With this product, it was as if he read my mind (or was watching over my shoulder). I got his much more detailed full Wordpress book, and was steadily working through - well, okay not so steadily, more spasmodically - trying to produce my own short list for setting up a decent working new site. By way of explanation, I have fiddled around with all sorts of website creators including bare html, and have not embraced WordPress much.
Then he goes and produces this condensed guide, which summarizes just what I was attempting. A step by step guide to the essentials that you can have at your elbow when starting out.
I am delighted that he has made it easier to get to grips with the basics of a WordPress site. I will refer to his longer book in due course, but for now this is just what I needed.
I'm assuming that you are here to begin with because you need or want a website and the whole prospect seems a bit overwhelming to you. Putting myself in your shoes I'm also guessing that you have already been to many places looking for information. Am I right?
It just so happens that I have taught several folks how to build Wordpress websites so I have some idea of how one would set out a written guideline. It's not an easy task!
Just as I have taught folks these things, Dr. Andy Williams has been my teacher for years now, so I had no doubt that he would present himself well for you. And he has.
Dr. Andy says that there is a steep learning curve to the technical aspects of Wordpress and in a sense he is correct. This book takes care of that for you. However, it has been my personal experience that beyond that part of it, it's even more of a steep "concept" learning curve. But, once you understand the "concept" of the Wordpress platform, and site building becomes more intuitive, then you can knock up a pretty good Wordpress website in a half day by the time you build your second or third site. So take heart.
Just as Windows is at the core all about copy and paste, so is Wordpress about addons and workarounds.
Once you purchase some webhosting and click a button to tell your host to build a core Wordpress site, it will be there for all to see in about 15 seconds. It will be a site entitled "Hello World."
After that, it's up to you to make it into YOUR website by putting various doodads on there and then adding spiffy content. Rapid Wordpress Websites is all about the technical aspects of helping you to understand how to get to the point that you can add your own content to make it your website.
Using Rapid Wordpress Websites as a strict walk-thru, you'll have your site ready for content in a day or three, depending on your intensity.
When I opened Dr. Andy's book, I did so as a student, such as yourself, to see how it flowed. As a matter of fact I was you at one time. I dallied with Wordpress three times over several years before the concept clicked so that I was able to build my first site. See, I didn't have this great book to go by like you have.
Knowing what I know about Wordpress, I can report confidently that for a beginner website builder, it's perfect. Unlike many tutorials, which begin simply and then move onto more complex subjects until you're completely lost, his instruction is workman like and simple throughout.
He tells (and shows) you what to do step by step with good, simple, rational explanations all the way through. Trust me, this guy could go a LOT deeper into the guts of Wordpress, but he restrains himself for your benefit.
By the time you finish this easy but comprehensive book you WILL have your working website and you WILL understand the concept of Wordpress.
I promise you, please...It's not hard to build your first website, IF you have the proper instruction, and this book IS the proper instruction.
Save yourself much confusion and brain ache over trying to dig all this stuff out for yourself with Google Search. Go ahead and pay the piddly little price for this book so you can just get on with it.
And lastly let me tell you this. A million dollar website will do you not one whit of good if Google doesn't like it and Google is a finicky beast. Not only does Dr. Andy take you from zip to a dandy website, but he also does it in such a way as to make it Google friendly so that it will rank high up in the search engine results. Dr. Andy Williams is a Search Engine Result guru, aside from a super explainer of Wordpress.
I'm a Dr. Andy fan and you will be too once you see your nice shiny new website working like a well oiled machine, making friends and impressing Google!
Note to Dr. Andy: I had NO idea about the importance of doing article tags just so. Thanks! I'll refer back to this often. You bet!
And nope, potential purchaser of "Rapid Wordpress Websites" we aren't related. He's just one heck of a professor!
