I deducted one star because some of the images were small and blurry on my android phone where I read most of my kindle books. This has not been a problem in most of Dr. Andy's past books and he is looking into it. The other improvement in this book would be an expanded section on security with some specific techniques and plugins recommended. As an old timer with WordPress, I know how important security is. WordPress security could be a book all by itself.
But all in all this is a good beginners guide to setting up and operating a WordPress site.
Inside the covers you will find things like which web host to use. That resource alone can save countless hours of searching for a reliable yet affordable option - and there are countless ones out there some better than others.
The nine checkpoints make it easy to quickly run through some of the more mundane tasks you have to do to get Wordpress up and running properly.
The reader will know whether they should use posts or pages to showcase their knowledge and insights and why.
Then what to look for so you KNOW your site backup has worked can save heartbreak should disaster strike and you need to restore your blog. (There are all sorts of little tips like this that aren't obvious to first timers but are more than just good to know.)
The nice thing is the demonstration site will also become a valuable resource as Andy fleshes it out over time with more content. To me it's like an extension of the book. Making this quite a bargain for those new to WordPress.
As has been pointed out, the images were not as crisp as they might have been. But they still help you to see what you need to do so I didn't deduct any stars for that as it didn't impact the usefulness of this book.
I have been a follower of Dr Williams for some years, and have several of his products. He is a reliable source of good information, none of the instant riches stuff, just general good sense and building up steadily to meet your goals.
With this product, it was as if he read my mind (or was watching over my shoulder). I got his much more detailed full Wordpress book, and was steadily working through - well, okay not so steadily, more spasmodically - trying to produce my own short list for setting up a decent working new site. By way of explanation, I have fiddled around with all sorts of website creators including bare html, and have not embraced WordPress much.
Then he goes and produces this condensed guide, which summarizes just what I was attempting. A step by step guide to the essentials that you can have at your elbow when starting out.
I am delighted that he has made it easier to get to grips with the basics of a WordPress site. I will refer to his longer book in due course, but for now this is just what I needed.
