Editorial Reviews

Review

"Read it because she sounds like an interesting person; because it will make you cry for her and admire her; and because she describes a slice of female experience that is all too common and all too little discussed." The F-Word

"Disturbing, powerful, and very real." Bestselling author, Stephen Leather

"I urge anyone to read this woman's story even if you feel well-informed in this area. Q's words and the feeling behind her words are moving, violent, graphic and painful. They come from a place of lived-experience and honesty. Too often are voices such as hers ignored and marginalised." The Other Side of the Apple

"The popularity of Secret Diary of a Call Girl was a very good example of the current societal tendency to push us towards accepting prostitution as a job which is taken through choice and which isn't a high-risk, abusive and traumatic way to earn a living. I was pleased to find Ruth Jacobs' publication shows an experience that details the starker psychological complexities of working in the sex trade and that we hear the interview verbatim from the woman concerned, In Her Own Words." Writer, Kate Kerrow

"In Her Own Words is an extremely frank account of the complex psychology involved in selling sex." Nicole Rowe, Feminist Me Up

From the Author

The video interview has been transcribed completely unedited. I have considered editing, but as the woman I interviewed (referred to as Q) is no longer alive, I feel it would be wrong to make any changes without her consent. The words in this book are Q's, and to respect her, her memory, and the fearlessness and courage she showed in disclosing her innermost self, I have left her words untouched.

This charity publication and the cause is very close to my heart, even more so because the woman I interviewed was a dear friend, a wonderful person, and who had a traumatic life, suffering childhood sexual abuse and then being pimped on the streets from the age of fifteen. After escaping from her pimp, she became a top call girl in London.

From making this publication available, I hope to change the stigma some of society has against women in prostitution, which is mainly through lack of knowledge. 75% of women in prostitution have been sexually and physically abused as children, 70% have experienced multiple rapes, and 67% meet the criteria for posttraumatic stress disorder.

The beauty of this powerful and short piece is that it allows the reader to feel the despair behind the woman, the fear that any intimacy will shatter her world. Although you know that she is not having "fun" when working, she has no idea what fun is, so everything short of utter degradation is called "fun." Her tragedy becomes visceral knowing that she cannot voice her nightmare, her language had to shrink and twist itself into her reality. Or perhaps, she never experienced a reality much outside the prison walls she speaks from. Either way, the readers' heart aches knowing that her world is closing in on her rapidly.
Should anyone from the porn/sex industry take her words literally, know that they lack empathy utterly and are sociopaths. This is a piece to be read with a wide-open heart and a box of tissues nearby.

I don't need to read Ruth's book to know the horrors. I had friends who had to do it for real. The pain was there for all to see, rich clothes, nice houses and cars never make you feel a real person. My friends would be anything to any man but in private, they cut themselves off from love

This interview is a raw, powerful glimpse into the wounded heart and soul of a prostituted woman as you watch her flip flop between describing how soul-killing the "work" is to how she is having "fun" and doing society a "favor" by allowing men to inflict the hate they carry for girls and women onto rented female bodies. These women deserve so much more than being treated like men's toilets. I dare you to look past the checked-out exterior and defensive words of "fun" this woman uses. Put yourself in her place and ask yourself if renting your body to violent, degrading strangers would be fun for you or your sister or mother or daughter. I dare you to care about prostituted women and not throw them away or think they're more immune to pain and mis-treatment than anyone else.

Don't listen to the loud lies and smoke and mirrors that punters/johns, the media and the porn industry spin, such as that porn and prostitution are "fun" or "empowering" or a real "choice". This woman's words prove otherwise. Prostitutes are the *real* experts on the reality of prostitution (and porn); let them be your guide in sifting out the Truth from the lies.

A riveting story considering the mind set and reality of life on the streets. This ain't no Pretty Woman, but needs to be told for those considering the fantasy of glamor that in reality is a soul destroyer. A human being becomes the sex object to fulfill the fantasies of men. Read it and understand the mindset next time you ask the question of how can a woman degrade herself so low?

Ruth Jacobs has done a massive service to prostitutes the world over by publishing this interview. Her interview with a young call girl, who was recruited into "the Life" at the age of 15, draws us into the heartbreaking power of the life of prostitution to completely destroy any hope of ever having normal relationships, normal self esteem, in fact a normal life of any kind.

Ruth has made this interview available with the hope of raising consciousness of this awful situation and shining a revealing light on the myth of the "happy hooker."

All proceeds from the book are donated to Beyond the Streets, a charity that helps women exit prostitution.

Please pass this on to your friends and encourage them to buy the book. Each purchase you make goes toward helping a woman leave the streets and begin the healing process.

I love the fact that this book was written as it was said with out any sugar coating. I am always interested to read a different view on a world that can be glorified in television movies. I would recommend this only if you are able to read the truth about this industry. It was interesting to read, sad and at times difficult to gain insight into this young ladies life.

I bought this little book on a friend's recommendation, half expecting it to be a prank - pornography dressed up to pass as social commentary. Well, the contents gave me a gut reaction all right, but it was heartsickness, not titillation.

It's a quick read, an easy read superficially. But reading the deadness between the lines is more disturbing than a melodramatic rendering could have been.

The first hand account of a mixed up, troubled prostitute putting on a brave face. As I read this I saw in my mind's eye a girl with rings under her eyes, smoking a cigarette in a cloud of smoke, with a cassette recorder between her and the author in a restaurant. A quick 30 minute read that shows you a first hand look at life on the line.
