This story is more than just two people getting over an abusive past and learning to trust and love again, it’s also about the fear of marriage and the uncertainty of being a parent. Especially in Michael’s case as he grew up in several dysfunctional settings. He lacked faith in himself.
I also enjoyed the way Sheridan was the only person who could see past the facade Michael erected to keep people away from him, though he never understood that’s what he was doing.
If you enjoy a strong romance plot and innocent sex, you’ll want to read this book. This is a Make-you-feel-good-inside story. I give it my 5 feathers.
This romance has not great detours such as Drew and Alyssa shared but its deep exploration of relationships affected by life lived in the past is just as compelling.
I can hardly wait to get my hands on the story of Desiree. I have enjoyed all four of these novels in different ways and yet in the same way as well. These novels burrow deep into the soul of the writer and bare some of her own life experiences and attitudes. That is what good writing, readable stories are made of, the soul of their creator. Thanks again Simone for another wonderful read.
Being a writer, I enjoyed the literary elements to this tale. It was a smart story and though I sometimes felt emotionally disengaged, it fit and made perfect sense. Simone creates such vivid characters that my own moments of disconnect seemed to parallel the awkwardness of Sheridan and Michael when the faced uncertain moments and seemed disengaged themselves. It was actually quite brilliant and it worked beautifully with the story. I felt more in tune with Sheridan and Michael because of it.
Another aspect I enjoyed was the role-reversals in the main protagonists. It was nice to see an empowered woman, assured of her love for a man she adores, take charge and teach him how beautiful life can be, especially considering the scars that marred them. Equally broken, Sheridan and Michael have their own strengths and weaknesses, but the greatest thing they have is their love. That is a powerful message.
I read this June 26 2017. I also read the original in 2015. I believe the ending was different. I just felt that something was missing. I may be wrong. It's one of my favorite books to reread. I have kept it on my Kindle.
This is the story of Sheridan and Michael. Sheridan appeared already in the first book of the saga When the Music Ends (The Hearts in Winter Chronicles). She is the sunshine girl who doesn't deserve to suffer what she goes through. By the end of that first book, she is already in love with her grumpy, shaggy, tall and dark literature professor at university, Michael Burke. In this book, ten years later, she gets him.
Both characters are wounded, both hide it in their own particular way. Even when they were already in love at the beginning (from the distance), the evolution of the romance brings them together completely, bodies, hearts and souls.
And of course there is a very happy ending... (just how I like them).
Note: I belong to a beta reading group with Simone, so some might consider my recommendation biased. It is not, but anyone is entitled to an opinion, even a wrong one.
