“To all the artists…
Thank you for bravely
Showing us what you see
When you close your eyes
I see the world differently
Because of you”
Ruthy, you are an artist and a work of art too. I see the world differently because of you! As in all of Ruth’s stories, some form of art is always represented in addition to her written words. In the first few pages the author’s descriptive language captured me and has me running to find images to illustrate her beautifully constructed story at every turn. Ruth has lived and breathed art since birth, the daughter of an animator, and she works in the world of art as well. She shares her life experience with every word. I can see her in her character Ava Jacobs.
‘Work of Art-The Inspiration’, the first story in this trilogy, features an eccentric painter, Maxwell Caswell, who captures the heart of Ava Jacobs. They meet at an art show in New York. She is there to help her boss and friend, Adam, her first big break after spending several years in his print shop. Max storms in having a typical Max tantrum and whisks Ava away from the show needing to escape the pressure of sales that crush his artistic spirit and bring out his dark side. They have an instant attraction that sparks and swirls at the first kiss of their hands like Van Gogh’s Starry Night.
Max and Ava make their homes in Southern California. Ava is a graduate of UCLA where she studied art history with a focus on contemporary art, and a minor in literature. Reading is a passion for her but she also holds an interest in writing about art. Ava says, “I’ve loved the experience of getting to know the artists. And seeing how people create sparked that feeling in me to create something too. I’m not an artist, but I do have a gift with words, so now I spend a lot of my free time writing.” Max is moody and eccentric and painting is his outlet. He has a darkness to him making him the perfect bad boy but there is more behind his darkness. He seems to live the life of the famed, artistic playboy but it isn’t the real “him”. It is the mask he has painted for his public that allows him to avoid having real, close relationships. “The Inspiration” finds Ava is inspired by Max’s art and Max’s whole spirit is inspired by the angel he finds in Ava, his new muse.
Each Chapter begins with a quote about art that sets the scene. I have made a Pinterest board for this story with the chapter quotes and pictures and links for the story. Ruthy and I will release pictures little by little. My real review can be found in the images and quotes her words have inspired. The Board is titled, “The Work of Art Trilogy-Book 1-The Inspiration by Ruth Clampett” and can be found on my Pinterest “Elli Iris”.
The whole book is based around their working relationship as she is hand-picked by Max to help with a book about his art. Their working relationship becomes more complicated as they both try to avoid their growing feelings for each other. Ava doesn’t believe he can give up his lifestyle so she looks elsewhere and Max sees her as something divine that he isn’t worthy of but that he can’t seem to rid himself of in his mind, heart or canvas. Will their connection move beyond the book they are creating? Will others stand in their way? The tension is delicious! Read and decide for yourself! I can’t wait for book two and three Ruthy!
