A bittersweet, comic rendering of everyday office life in miniature, based on the popular Instagram Figuratively Speaking. Using only his iPhone, his desk lamp, and his expansive collection of miniatures, Derrick Lin re-creates the everyday ups and downs of office life.

His Instagram, which grew out of an in-office creative challenge, took shape in 2014 and has been expanding steadily since. In intricately staged tableaus that are by turns laugh-out-loud funny or gently philosophical, Lin manages to capture the pains and pleasures of modern office life, from the joy of an unexpectedly slow day to a boozy office birthday party, a backstabbing colleague, and the agony of waiting on a new freelance gig. Even difficult moments are shown in a way that makes them lighter, more relatable, and unexpectedly funny.

Universally appealing, this book will resonate with anyone who has ever held down an office job—from those sitting down at their first desk to cubicle veterans—making it the perfect gift for college grads, a best office friend, or a retiring colleague.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Dozens of images within the book, to be released in October through Rizzoli, display Lin's mastery of composing miniature scenes. A bus squashes a man atop an accusatory work email directed at Lin—a mini visualization of "being thrown under the bus." A hand rests on a mouse, its fingers held aloft by little men, as a clever way to depict the stomach-gurgling feeling of hitting send too soon."
VICE

"Working only with his iPhone, desk lighting, and a broad array of miniatures,
Lin creates visual commentary on office life as well as recreations of popular artworks or scenes of escape. Many of his photos have been collected into an upcoming book titled Work, Figuratively Speaking: The Big Setbacks and Little Victories of Office Life, published this fall through Universe."
Colossal

"Derrick Lin bills himself an “observer of the tiny moments of agency life, figuratively speaking” and he has captured these moments of the workplace in pictures"
PhotoExcels

"Lin's work follows the grand tradition of artists who work in miniature, but rather than focusing on relationships or political struggles, he decided to hone in on the place where many of us spend the majority of our time—the office."
My Modern Met

"Derrick Lin is no quitter. Instead of fighting the negative forces at work in the office, he started portraying them through a not-even-imagined way. And it is not only the dark side of office life that he depicts, but ordinary everyday office life. But, how he depicts it is
something to marvel!"
Awesomebytes

"Using only his iPhone, a desk lamp, and an expansive collection of miniatures, Derrick seeks to find the humor of the everyday ups and downs of life.
He’s created over 300 vignettes, cleverly using the most ordinary objects as foundations of his tiny scenes."
HonestlyWtf.com

"All Derrick Lin needs is his iPhone, office supplies, a reading lamp and some tiny figures to create pieces that wryly comment on office life. Or, as he puts it, ‘imaginary scenes of my honest thoughts in work situations right on my work desk’."

I love this book and its tiny creative sceneries made around life-size items. Looking through this book never gets boring! It's a great coffee book.

Not figuratively speaking, if you've ever worked in an office setting, and especially if you've worked in the business sector, you will identify with everything in this book. The imagery is beautiful, every moment relatable, and if you put it on your coffee table it becomes the perfect conversation starter for heated debates about whether the figurines in the photos really are tiny or if the other objects are actually ginormous. This is the perfect book to sit down and flip through when you need a pick-me-up, a reminder that we all have these days, or just a few minutes away from the chaos. Cannot recommend enough for people who work. And also for people who have to interact with other people. So, everyone. I recommend this book for everyone.

So delightful and quite funny! Lin's book creates a sense of solidarity in workplace follies and fun. I instantly felt a part of the Cool Kids Club of office life with every "Oh boy, I can relate to that!" I giggled while flipping through for my first time. I keep a copy of this happy little book on my desk and often refer to it as notable situations happen. It's helped create a bond between my coworkers and I as we regularly glance across the conference room table with a silent "Oooooh boy..."

I love having this book on my desk. I find myself flipping through it during small moments of downtime and it always brings a smile to my face. I have been following @marsder from his early days, and being able to see his work in print is so refreshing! I find myself staring at his tiny masterpieces for minutes, appreciating every little well placed object and the perfect lighting that adds that signature touch to every photo. I highly recommend this as a gift to anyone who has worked at an office!

Derrick (whom I also adore on Instagram as @marsder) has captured the often unacknowledged moments of hope, frustration, exhaustion, pride, amusement and more through his art, which brilliantly juxtaposes the real world with miniature. I am continuously enthralled by the humanity and intimacy contained in each image. Whether you're laughing or sighing in commiseration, you will relate. I'm just so excited his work is now in book form! Every desk needs this book, if just to briefly peruse as a reprieve from office life!

If all your work days are perfect, this book will be of no use to you. If, on the other hand, you or someone you know occasionally finds themselves staring out the window during a meeting, this is exactly the book you need. Derrick Lin has a warm, playful view of the world and brings it to life page after delightful page. By the end you'll half expect Derrick's tiny figures to appear in your own office—and be a little disappointed when they don't.

From the very first page of this book, I found myself completely enthralled. The photos that the author captures are striking. But beyond that, the author's keen insight into life and how we all navigate the workplace is what makes this book a must-read. It's like someone took that thought you have in the middle of the day and put it on artistic display for you to reflect upon and laugh at. This is a very heartwarming and fun read.

I've been following this instagram account for a while. Clever, artistic, and always good for a positive, lighthearted chuckle. I love it even more in the format of a book. This has a permanent spot on my coffee table. It looks great there and it's one of those books that invites guests to mindlessly flip through the pages. Because the photos are so visually attention grabbing and the captions are so concise yet interesting.
