I have a various assortment of knives that I rotate around to take with me on camping/hiking trips. The largest knife I take with me is a Buck 119 (6 inch blade) and most are pocket sized. Giving them a "tune up" with this particular sharpener proved to be very easy and effective. The angled "guided system" really does help in maintaing a consistent stroke across the stone. None of my knives were in bad shape, so the lighter grit stone worked well in bringing back a sharper edge. I did have three hunting knives that belonged to my father that were is desperate need of a sharpening however. Putting an edge on these did take a while and I began the process on the corse stone. It took some time, but I eventually got these knives in pretty good shape. Ironically, I found out that my brother picked one of these up too over the holidays and he too has gotten some good results with the knives that he uses. Overall, I am pretty happy with the device and I'm still considering getting the larger version that is better suited for your workbench. The various online videos and reviews here really helped and I encourage you to check them out for yourself. Amazon definitely has the better price for this particular sharpener when compared to some of the other retailers in my area.
The workshop is easy to use and provides a wide variety of sharpening coarseness for every knife. The course steel even does a good job on hatchets and machetes.
Well made and the size and weight make it a good option for a waist-pack or a gear-slinger EDC. All you need to get the job done (correctly) in one compact package.
Smith's and DMT have similarly priced options for more advanced users (See DMT DUO-FOLD).
TIP: You can pry off either diamond plate (both are retained with a strong magnet) to reveal a secret storage compartment that will hold an allen wrench (for your Becker BK, et. al.) or some stropping compound (there is a very small leather strop, located on one side of the outer housing).
The angle guides are a mixed blessing (and curse) because they are raised ramps that are on both ends of each side and, so, they get in the way if you are attempting any other angle (such as with a Mora Scandi Grind) ... YOU CAN PRY THE FLAT DIAMOND PLATES (Course and Fine Grit) OFF OF THE HOUSING, THOUGH and DOING THAT WILL ALLOW FOR CUSTOM ANGLES ... BUT, AS WITH A DC4, YOU WILL NEED TO STABILIZE THE SMALLISH PLATE IN ORDER TO USE IT WITHOUT THE YELLOW HOUSING.
NOT SORRY I PURCHASED IT ... PERFECT FOR MY KA-BAR USN MARK-1 and my BECKER NECKER ... MY WENGER RANGERGRIP 78 and MY MULTI-TOOLS, Etc.
There is a rotating ceramic rod, on the side opposite the strop and it allows honing of bellies and recurves as well as being grooved for fish-hooks and there is a "Broad-Head Wrench" (just some slits that allow you to apply torque). There IS a short video on YouTube that shows how to use the features but I cannot access it just at this moment. I may link it to this review, later, if I am back in this neighborhood.
If you are a noob that has a standard saber-type grind and you are looking to maintain a working edge, out in the field, then THIS is a very useful and competitive option. I do NOT regret the purchase and I will use this thing, on those blades, to which it is best suited. If your primary blade is a Scandi or a Convexed grind then look elsewhere, for a more appropriate solution. the DMT Duo-Folds are a great option, too. I carry a Duo-Fold that is Xtra-Course and one that is Course-Fine, in my pocket organizer (expensive, though).
