I have a WorkSharp Ken Onion Edition sharpener. It's amazing. I ordered this sharpener for those times I don't need an odd angle, or a large setup. Also, I ordered this with the intent of it being an addition to both my hunting rig, and my bug out bag. Having tested recently in the field, it DOES work even when using the power inverter that's factory built into your vehicle (typically their not made for high drain devices), and it does the job well. The unit is quiet when compared to other units, and easy to use as there is one angle that is rigid and impossible to go past the guide setting. You can order Red Label Abrasive belts to give yourself more versatility for really dull knives (or really sharp knives you are just looking to touch up). All in all this is an affordable alternative to the more expensive options in the lineup, it is a great alternative for a bug out bag (and works well with solar panels), and is also a great alternative for your hunting gear to keep those field knives sharp. It is also well received as a gift. I highly recommend for an affordable sharpening solution

This Work Sharp Combo Knife Sharpener is fantastic. I'm one of those guys who could never get a knife sharp with a whetstone. Seriously. With a whetstone I would get close to a good edge then ruin it with one bad stroke. I've also been known to purchase a new knife before a hunting trip because all my other knives were dull. After receiving this sharpener I read the instructions and also watched online videos. The machine is very straight forward, no adjustments to make at all. I was thrilled with the first knife a ran through the machine. In no time it was sharper then it has ever been. RAZOR Sharp!! The guided ceramic bar built in to the machine is the important final touch. I've had this machine less than 24 hours and have already sharpened a dozen pocket knives and several filet knives that I thought where non salvageable.
Prior to purchasing this machine, I also purchased the Work Sharp Precision Adjust Knife Sharpener. It also works fantastic but cannot harness thinner blades like small pen knives and some filet knives. If someone wants a sharp knife, whether a carry knife, hunting/fishing knife or a kitchen knife, the Work Shop COMBO Knife Sharpener cannot be beat! Great product. Get some extra belts because you are going to use this machine often.

Works very well on all types of knives. The different bands are important so, buy the packet of interchangeable belts. After using the belts required to get the edges on your knives that you want, keep it set up with a finishing belt on it for touch-ups from time to time to keep good edges on you every-day-carry and most frequently used kitchen knife so you can hop to it easily as often as you want. It's so easy to run your blade through it a couple of times to freshen-up your edge to a razor finish. Changing belts is super-easy as they say. This model is a great value compared to others much more expensive. I can't imagine what more you could want. This does the job like nothing I've ever seen without eating-up the blade. I hated sharpening my EDC and watching my blade tip getting shorter and shorter. This doesn't eat steel. It takes off so little, I can't even detect any shavings of any kind. It just SANDS the edge sharp - doesn't CUT it.

This was primarily purchased to sharpen kitchen knives and works extremely well. One might spontaneously use it correctly without reading any instructions, but I found the instructions very helpful so that I was getting sharp knives right from the start. It is very easy to use in the same way that bicycles are very easy to ride once you know how. Anyone should easily be able to get very sharp kitchen knives with this very quickly. I sure did. Within an hour after first taking it out of the box I had sharpened around 2 dozen knives from paring knives up to carving knives. Some of those knives had been languishing in drawers for years since I had been unable to get them sharp previously. Now either my wife of I can literally pull any knife out of a drawer and know that they will work well for whatever kitchen tasks we have. Excellent!

I really wanted to love this sharpener. I recently purchased a water stone, a Ken Block Sharpener, and a couple of "ripper" style sharpeners. I can get a decent sharp edge with all of them, but I want a crazy sharp edge. I, also, don't want to pay $355 for a pro system. This Work Sharp will not get you the crazy sharp edge. Maybe, if I were more skilled with the ceramic rod, I could get a better edge. I will say that you can keep a very nice working edge on your knives with this tool. It would work well for kitchen duty and people that aren't half OCD in wanting that high carbon steel blade that is sharp as a scalpel. Unfortunately, that's me. So, I contacted Work Sharp and told them I was dissatisfied and I thought that the Amazon reviews had a lot of fakery in them. I do believe that is true because people are saying that this unit will give you a razor sharp edge with ease. I've sharpened 6 knives with it, with decent results, but I don't find it delivering on those claims. They offered an upsell for the Ken Onion or the next higher unit for a big discount. I am going to go for the upsell and give this unit to my sister. It is partly my fault because I wanted the best value and "idiot-proof" unit and should have bought the....better unit. This unit will be great in a kitchen for consistently sharp knives for food prep and keeping your pocket knife pretty sharp. It's a well-engineered unit. I would advise not to use the belt too often because it does remove a lot of material. I could recommend this sharpener highly if you want a tool to make knife sharpening easy and aren't concerned with having the sharpest knife on the block, so to speak.

I read some of the other product reviews and was struck by how many people seem to misunderstand what they bought. Used properly this is a handy contraption. It's a lot less capable than the full-sized Ken Onion edition - but with patience you can achieve a lot.

This is not a replacement for a full-size belt grinder. If you're a knife maker it probably could put an edge on a knife blank you DIY'd, but it's going to take a long time on this little unit. The motor is not very powerful, the belt is small and it is spinning pretty slow. If you press the knife with any significant pressure into the belt it will slow the machine down - but that's not how it's supposed to be used.

It is better to make more passes with only very light pressure than to press hard or move the blade very slowly to grind extra material. I also like to lift the blade away from the belt once it reaches the tip. If you pull it all the way out it is easy to round the tip (and you'll read lots of complaints about this if you google it).

The first time you sharpen a knife it is also important to realize you may be changing the factory grind angle. Especially for kitchen knifes which often have a very steep angle and a delicate edge. Outdoor knives are more likely to already be at or around the angle this machine is set too because they need to stand up to more abuse. Even for kitchen knives though, I'd rather use this belt than those other powered sharpeners that use abrasive stones. Once the angle is set, you won't need to grind as much the next time.

Here's a few tricks to maximize utility.

1. It comes with a single, non-adjustable preset sharpening angle of 25 degrees. However, you can sharpen at any angle if you find some way to hold the knife steady by hand. The easiest second angle to achieve is to hold the knife vertical for a steeper angle relative to the belt - such as for kitchen knives (though it can be tricky to do this steadily on a long blade).

2. Even though the tool is low-powered, it is still basically a mini belt grinder. I remove the guide and use it for non-knife stuff too. E.g. sharpening drill bits, putting a new tip on my awl, fixing up marred flat blade screwdrivers, sharpening gasket scrapers, smoothing small parts etc. The slow speed of the belt and low power can actually be a benefit - you can work slowly.

I'm sure Worksharp offers only one grit on purpose to discourage people from using this base-model unit instead of paying for the better and more expensive versions. The other versions are more powerful and offer more angle options - but with patience and different belt grits I'm confident I'm achieving similar results.

4. The hone is also meant to be used gently. Avoid the temptation to push down hard. Better to do 20 super light passes than 3 where you push hard. You're just making sure the edge burr is lined up straight. That's easier to get correct with some light touches than potentially pushing it back and forth with forceful passes on alternating sides.
