No Answer Key Included

So far, I like this workbook very much. It reinforces the textbook in a very intelligent manner. My one quibble is the lack of an answer key in the back. Yes, you can contact the publisher and they will authorize you to have one, and yes, it's free. However, it's a pain in the @$$. You have to submit a form on line; then you get an e-mail with conflicting as well as downright incorrect information; once you figure out which link is the one to use, and which directions are the one to follow, you have to open two new accounts with IDs and Passwords and all that nonsense.Then you have to download an application, and then you get to open the Answer Key. This is just plain stupid and I am quite sure it doesn't prevent students from cheating. Frankly, if students cheat, it's their loss, and not my problem. And IF this is deemed so necessary to the survival of our nation, then once someone has been "authorized," just send a hard copy of the Answer Key for heaven's sake; don't make him go through changes. Finally, there should be some warning to the purchaser that there is no Answer Key included and that he is going to have to go through conniptions to get one. What a waste of time. Without all of this, I would probably have given this five stars. I haven't finished the Workbook yet, so I don't know if the quality is consistent throughout. Three stars it is.

It's a good workbook with nice variation in types of exercise within each chapter (the type of exercises largely stays the same for all chapters). The pages are a little flimsy - they're meant to be easy to tear out, but if you work in the book itself it can be bothersome.
A major note - it does NOT come with an answer guide - you need to ask for it online. I did so and they sent me the file quickly, but it involves installing a new program and means you'll need a computer to use it.
That's a hassle - but the book is worth it.

What do you have to do to get an answer key?

The exercises themselves are ok. The printing quality is on the poor side where the letters are slightly pixelated and the first few pages in my book were actually printed at an angle...

My major concern is about the answer key. Without it, this 'workbook' is not of much use. I tried to email the Harper Collins address provided in the description several times over the month and have yet to receive a response. As instructed in the book, I then went to Harper Collins website and requested 'teaching guide' multiple times after filling out their tedious forms. However, up to this point, all I have got is still silence! What do you have to do to get an answer key?! I knew learning Latin is hard but did not imagine it would be this hard...

Do not buy this as a Latin study aid, as for some reason they declined to provide any answers to any of the exercises. I got this thinking that it would be handy in brushing up on my Latin for a coming exam, but there's no way to check your answers, so what's the point?

This is the 7th Edition of this workbook. While it is somewhat useful, it does have one glaring omission and it falls short in another important area. There is no direct testing or review of new vocabulary words. New words of course are provided in every chapter of the text, but there is no vocabulary tests to see if they were actually learned. The reader is just supposed to have memorized them successfully. If you didn't... well, lots of luck. You would think that after six revisions, someone would have thought of adding this common element of language learning to this workbook, but you'd be wrong. There is also a lack of exercises on practicing raw declensions and conjugations. These are included, but usually only a couple of them at most. There should be a lot more. Just because you declined one or two words doesn't mean you've got it down cold. There should be at least 10 test examples or more. I constantly had the feeling the workbook designers were trying to save paper (you write directly into the book), so they didn't include things that they could have. Hopefully, when they do the 8th edition, the authors will make an effort to address these issues and make their workbook more helpful to the students using it.

This is a good workbook and about what you would expect for a Latin primer. Unfortunately, I have found this set entirely boring and lacking in any ability to engage me in the subject matter. It is far easier to translate a few Latin passages every day which forces me to be functional and to adopt vocabulary that I am naturally interested in. This is a good workbook and system if you want to have a dry, public-school way of learning Latin. You will learn it if you are consistent, but I found it Incredibly dull.

I'd definitely purchase the Text book for this study, but unless you're in a class situation and this workbook is required, I'd pass on it. Unless you just want to use it to practice and have a alternate source to check your answers.

This comes in handy when paired with the textbook. Some of the exercises seem like a bit of filler, but it is handy to have around for the chapters that have either more material to cover or have complicated grammar. The pages are designed so that they can easily be removed and they have places for students to write their names so that they can be handed in for grading. The only drawback to this is that if you are working thorugh the exercises on your own like myself, there is no answer key. In that case you might be better off using the self tutorial exercises at the back of the regular textbook for practice.
