Editorial Reviews
On her transcendent new record, Workin' On A World, Iris DeMent faces the modern world — as it is right now — with its climate catastrophe, pandemic illness, and epidemic of violence and social injustice — and not only asks us how we can keep working towards a better world, but implores us to love each other, despite our very different ways of seeing. 1. It is also includes the most uptempo and uplifting music she has ever recorded, mixing exuberant country-gospel with tender wispy ballads - all with glorious melodies. She has never sung or played piano better in her life.
But that’s only half the story of Working On A World. Its lyrics are a call for political and social action to protect democracy and civil society from the cancer of hate, greed and authoritarianism. Drawing upon the bravery and impact of past and current political activists, Dement seeks to convince us that the struggle will prevail and does so in the most joyful way.
At no point does the message overpower the glorious music. But it does signal that this is music that matters.
An instant classic that will be recognised as such.
No problems with the service.
