Calificado en Estados Unidos el 7 de noviembre de 2014If your fairly new to carpentry and will be working alone, this book/author is wonderful. Being alone has lots of challenges. I know this well. He offers many helpful ideas on getting over obstacles confronting single workers. If he did not solve a problem for me, his general advice was often inspirational in helping me come up with my own novel solutions. I also have his book on measuring, marking and laying out. It too, is essential reading for single workers. I dare say, anything he writes is more than worth the price. I'd have never been able to renovate my house without him. I would have needed help.
I offer suggestions to other authors. Old homes are not built to precise specifications. We need more on how to work around things encountered. Also a book about various tools and how they can be very useful. Like a 3.5 inch planer, an oscillating tool, etc. People working alone or finding problems need to know about tools that will help them. Repairing houses is far more challenging than building from scratch. I'd like to see and clearing house on the net with tips on working alone or overcoming obstacles. Youtube is helpful at times. just thought I'd pass it all on! I often found Youtube more helpful than many of my how-to books.

Calificado en Estados Unidos el 2 de abril de 2023Excellent for information since this book will guide me for the restoration improve work that I will mostly need to do by myself. Most "professionals" in my area charge a lot of money, have a very busy schedule & Not do the best work for the money! My Bachelor of Science degree, Industrial Design provides excellent education especially for research to discover & do what needs to be done for my retired Army veteran's life.

Calificado en Estados Unidos el 21 de junio de 2019This book is filled with ideas for someone who for whatever reason has to work alone. I really liked the simple jigs and methods used for lifting and handling heavy materials. It was a bit technical at times and made me wish I paid more intention in basic Geometry. It's reference book that I know I will be going back to time and time again.

Calificado en Estados Unidos el 12 de julio de 2023I love this book! I keep buying copies and giving them as gifts. It’s not just that it has great ideas about working alone but it also does it safely. In addition, it covers the philosophy of solving problems in a safe and efficient way. Can’t recommend it enough.

Calificado en Estados Unidos el 10 de noviembre de 2021The author give many useful tips along with what he does alone and when he hires help. A 3/4 inch sheet of plywood is about 60 lbs so being smart helps. He describes a number of homemade tools and jigs as well as commercially made helpful gizmos. Very readable. If you do construction or remodeling or are a homeowner who mostly works alone you will learn valuable tips and tricks.

Calificado en Estados Unidos el 10 de mayo de 2012I agree that the book itself has lots of useful info, but I think its a little dated. For example, I think that most weekend warrior DIY's have cordless drills, and the likes i.e. nail guns at a stretch, so I was surprised in the text that the author "highly recommends" getting these tools(this book is supposedly aimed at professional contractors 'going alone so I would expect them (and majority of serious DYI to have these in their tool kits already (location 241 in the Kindle Version). I agree back in the early to mid 90's, only serious DIY may have had a good quality cordless drill, but not in today (maybe I am biased, but this book was aimed at professionals).
I imagine that the Kindle version does not do just to the diagrams as the hard copy version, but I haven't been able to compare it for myself. The diagrams are readable, just a little bland and small.
I also believe that the books should have companion sizing in metric - not a big issue for me, but makes this book more readable for the internationals.
Do I recommend this book - Yes, but only just! For the Kindle version, I believe that it should be around the $6 dollar range (half the price of the hardcopy and not 80% of the hard copy) and then I think I would have no problems giving it an unreserved YES and probably 4 stars

Calificado en Estados Unidos el 5 de febrero de 2010As the owner/operator of a handyman service I am always trying to add to my list of jobs I can do without
assistance. He mentions a few ideas I have discovered on my own that I know work, and a lot more I might not
ever have thought about. I hesitated buying the book due to a couple of bad reviews, but I'm glad I ignored
them. If you are a weekend "honey-do" man or a sole proprieter you should find several very useful tips in this
book.
As for any bad reviews-if you are so good at what you do to criticize this book then why are you reading
it in the first place? Because of you some people might miss out on a real gem. I'd be interested in how your
skills stack up against John's. Not well, I would imagine.

Calificado en Estados Unidos el 3 de agosto de 2010This Book Has some good ideas in it. A lot of it common sense. Example the cover has a picture of author carrying a sheet of plywood up a ladder with a C-clamp as a handle! I was in the middle of roofing an out building with my wife as a helper. That hint alone made the job possible.

"jpdespault"Calificado en Japón el 29 de octubre de 20044.0 de 5 estrellas Working Alone by John Carrol
I really liked this book. It provides alot of do's and Don'ts for the home builder. It clearly illustrates, step by step, how to build or fix a home. If you are interested in DYI material, then this is your book. One point against the book is that is targeted to an American audience so others will have to convert the measurements to metric.
