About the Author
His favourite teaching moments are when you finally find that magic metaphor or demonstration which makes a complicated and abstract concept feel natural and memorable.
Devin Hunt teaches a wide range of topics for mid-stage entrepreneurs, with a focus on product design and skill-building for executive teams. Cofounder of Lyst, one of Europe's top tech startups. Devin shares his writing at hailpixel.com and lives in London.
His favourite moment in a workshop is when you've delivered so much value to an audience that they've completely set aside their skepticism, are up for anything, and are practically jumping out of their seats to try it for themselves.
Together we've built and run workshops covering every type of audience: executives, undergrads, MBAs, disadvantaged youths, busy professionals, and more. We've designed everything from 20-minute teasers to 3-month intensives, in locations ranging from Costa Rica and Qatar through to London and Berlin. We've taught for companies like HP and Deloitte and for universities like Oxford and NYU. We've built workshops for every price point, from free upskilling (paid for by the state or employer) through to £3000-per-seat executive education. We've taught casual events, with beer in hand and flip-flop on foot, through to formal, posh affairs with glitzy venues and high-end catering.
Perhaps most importantly, we can teach you how to do this. We've trained teachers up from scratch who are now billing north of £2000 per day, and who are getting invited back to teach again and again. This stuff isn't complicated. You can learn it, and you can do it.

I generally do not like non-fiction, prescriptive books. I think YouTube has largely destroyed the price to value ratio for these books. But this one is different. It was incredibly valuable *and* I'm confident I'll return to it again any time I am making a workshop.
I bought this before giving one of my first paid workshops. I was very confident in my material and had given plenty of free workshops in the past. Once I got the book, I completely ditched my old approach. I couldn't read more than 1-2 pages without putting the book down and changing my workshop. It was amazing.
The first half of the book is a process for creating the workshop material from scratch. The second half of the book is kind of like a list of random tactical tips or hacks that could be helpful. I used every part of the first half and maybe 1/3 of the second half.
Beyond all the tactical tips, I loved this book for 2 main reasons:
1. It made me way less nervous to present. Not because of tricks like breathing techniques, but because my workshop was much simpler and I was much more confident in the outcome.
2. It made me much more likely to give a workshop / lecture in the future. I feel like a have a tool (this book) that has removed most of the ambiguity and variability of making and preparing for a workshop.
Rob shares his personal successes and failures to drive home the point that all it takes is effort and intent to run a great workshop.

This book breaks down workshops step-by-step and provides extremely practical tips that took my workshops from good to great. However, what made this book particularly transformational for me was that it lays out some fundamental principles of effective communication that go beyond workshops: for example, the idea of learning outcomes, teaching formats, and facilitation techniques... all utterly useful in business and life.
Rob's last book, The Mom Test, is one of my top three product books of all time, and after reading this book from Rob and Dev, I can only say "they've done it again". Highly recommended.
My copy is already well dog-eared with parts to re-visit the next time I have a workshop to plan!
