Winston S. Churchill (1874-1965) has been called 'the greatest Briton'. An international statesman, orator, biographer, historian, author and Nobel Prize winner, his works remain in print with the world's leading publishers.

Educated at Harrow and Sandhurst, Winston spent several years in the army before becoming a newspaper correspondent and then an MP. His cabinet positions included First Lord of the Admiralty at the outbreak of the First World War and later Chancellor of the Exchequer.

Churchill became Prime Minister in 1940 and for five years led Britain though its 'finest hour'. Defeated in the July 1945 election, he was Leader of the Opposition until re-elected Prime Minister in 1951. He was knighted in 1953, the same year he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature. He stepped down as Prime Minister in 1955 and remained an MP until 1964.

I found this volume (and the other 4) very readable, authoritative, informative and sometimes revealing, especially to a Turkish reader like myself. Churchill is in general a mystery for us Turks and the classical discourse about this giant personality is such that, following the ill-fated Dardanelles campaign of 1915, he was an outcast in Britain until the Second World War. This belief is certainly wrong: this book is open proof of his continuing role within British political decision making during and after the WWI.

He was the person who coined the sticking term "Middle East", was for two years behind-the-scenes boss of Col. Lawrence (of Arabia), participated or directly behind many fateful events about the future of Palestine and the Israel State, created the vision for the future of the former Ottoman Vilayets of Mosul, Baghdat, Syria, et al., was central in the capture of Mosul-Kirkuk oil fields etc.

Also interesting is to learn the details of his role during the 1919-1922 Turkish Independence War, his support of a Turkish Constantinople, his early realism about leaving Turkey to Turks, his counter arguments and letters to Lloyd George about his mistake of supporting the Greek campaign in Anatolia. He was a realist all-round and a respectful sympathizer of Mustafa Kemal.

This book is a delight for the curious reader who has any interest in the WWI and Churchill's key role in defining the Middle East. It is also very interesting to read Churchill's perspective on the Sevres being a void agreement, as soon as it was signed.

I love Churchill's style and his authenticity, having been an insider to the conduct not only of WW1, but especially the aftermath. Such a messy situation was left when Germany capitulated, and the Western victors were so decimated and desperate to turn their back on it, that they abandoned the field, leaving Russia to the mercy of the Bolsheviks and the Armenians to the mercy of the Turks. Churchill was for engaging with the Germans and the US to assist the democratic parties being slaughtered by the Bolsheviks, and for working with the Italians to control and re-orientate the Turkish authorities, but it was not to be. This is riveting insight.

Beware! Some Scribner's Sets are 6 Volumes, not 5 Volumes

I'm sure Volume Four is a 4-star book. However, while most photos and descriptions, including the "Look Inside" feature, show the Scribner's Set in its 5-volume edition with Volume 4 as The Aftermath, you need to contact the seller to verify that the Volume 4 they are selling is The Aftermath and not The Teutonic Collapse. Some Scribner's sets have The Aftermath as Volume 5 and The Eastern Front as Volume 6. I found out the hard way when I got a copy of Volume 5 that was The Aftermath and a copy of Volume 4 that was not The Aftermath, but rather The Teutonic Collapse, an earlier portion of the series that covered the end of the war.
