Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 5-9-Following a chronological arrangement, this book is strongest in its coverage of the origins and development of the Cold War. Providing background information about the Russian Revolution, American opposition to the Red Army, Stalinism, and the Yalta and Potsdam Conferences, Bjornlund sets the stage for growing Soviet-American misunderstanding and mistrust. She excels at showing how apparently well meaning or even defensive measures, such as the Marshall Plan or the USSR's desire for a "buffer zone," were misinterpreted by the opposing sides. The text stresses the alternating freezes and thaws in East-West relations, as the world experienced escalation, detente, re-escalation, and finally glasnost and the fall of the Soviet Union. Developments on the home front, such as the Red Scare, McCarthyism, and the House Un-American Activities Committee, and major international events, such as the Berlin Wall, Cuban Missile Crisis, and Vietnam War, are included. Often critical of American policies, particularly those of Truman and Carter, the author does a good job of showing the interpretation of events from the Communists' perspective. The book is readable, logically presented, and easy to follow. The black-and-white photos are serviceable, but the maps lack detail. David Pietrusza's The End of the Cold War (Lucent, 1995; o.p.) has more detail on the breakup of the Eastern block, but less on the origins of the Cold War. Earle Rice's The Cold War (Lucent, 2000) is similar in content, but less detailed than Bjornlund's book. For slightly older readers, Michael Kort's The Cold War (Millbrook, 1994) is more comprehensive.
