From the Author

Several years ago, I co-authored the college textbook titled, Stress Management for Life. Since that time, thousands of students around the country have used the text as part of a Stress Management or similar college course.

Since that time, students have frequently told me how much they loved the book. Time after time I would hear people say that the book was "Life-Changing" or "It had a profound effect on every aspect of my life."

This is great to hear. I'm so happy to hear that it helps.

The problem is that the next thing they would tell me is that they wanted to buy a copy of the book for their favorite people in their lives, but they didn't want to pay the college textbook price. It's too expensive to buy for gifts.

I wrote this book, The World is NOT a Stressful Place, to give the same very useful information that is found in the textbook, but it is written in a more personal style and keeps everything very simple and easy to understand.

But best of all, this book doesn't cost the same as the college textbook.

After having worked with so many people over the years, I've come to know what works to help people reduce and prevent their stress. It's funny; when I tell people that I teach courses in stress management, invariably, the response that I immediately get from these fine folks is, "Boy, that's a class I need to take!" or "That's a class my family member or friend needs to take!"

Everyone I know is stressed out. But they don't know what to do about it.

After having worked with so many people over the years, I've come to know what works to help people reduce and prevent their stress. Most of this learning is found in this book. I'm confident the information and "tools" that you will find in this book will help you learn how to be happier, more peaceful, and much healthier!

It's worth the read.

The concepts presented in this book have been around for over 60 years with many previous books being written on the subject. I found nothing useful from the book, but if I had not read or taken any courses on stress managment and responsibility, I might have found the book to contain new information. However, the book merely lightly discusses concepts and does not go into any detail on the whys and hows to incorprate rationality, responsibility, and accountability into one's life. This book comes near to plagiarizing the works of Harper and Ellis in the '50s and '60s with their well-known work and book on the ABCs of rational thinking and behavior. This author might write as if he discovered all this himself, but in reality he does a poor job of relating the works of those who came before him - in my opinion.

MY OVERALL IMPRESSION OF THE BOOK: I have read over two hundred of what I consider the best "self-help" books from a variety of different genres and this is one book that has been one of the most influential if not the most influential book I have ever read in my entire life besides scripture. Besides being influential to me, this book has apparently already been a huge success and it has been truly tested so one reading it will not feel like part of an experiment and that is because this book is based off of the author's Stress Management class at WSU and it is a culmination of a rich dialogue between a teacher and thousands of students that have learned and grown together over many years.

THE IDEA BEHIND THE COVER ILLUSTRATION: As the picture illustrates, the world is only stressful when we try to lift up the world. The author of this book makes it clear that we have one of two choices, we can try and lift up the world and feel stressed or we can be lifted up in the world and feel triumphant. The world is one of two ways to us! Despite debunking that famous long held myth of Atlas holding up the world and how it relates to us the author is very sympathetic and considerate to us all who go through stress. The author says, "Stress is like the strings of a violin or a tennis racquet--too much or too little tension inhibits perfect performance." So it is evident that the author is not just interested in eliminating your stress in life but in enhancing your performance in life.

THE OVERALL CONTENT WITHIN THE BOOK: With the actual content of the book, it is power packed and it is not very long which is perfect because long books tend to stress people out.

This book is one of those books that you will want to read over and over. The author does a fantastic job of explaining how the stress response works in the first few chapters, which is great for fight or flight novices as well as a great review for those who know a little bit more about stess and the body, then goes on to talk about many different areas of stess, stress relievers, how to avoid stress, etc. The author is great at keeping this book interesting with personal stories, stories from his many years of teaching as well as advice and activities for the reader to try and use in their everyday lives. I am one of his past students and can truly say that he knows his stuff and that he practices what he preaches on a daily basis, and it shows! I think everyone who reads this book and puts what they learn to use will not only have a more enjoyable life, but have a longer more fulfilling life to enjoy. You don't have to feel stressed out to read this book, maybe you know someone who is and you can give them advice after reading it, either way living in the fast paced world that we do I think everyone could benifit from reading it.
