Format: Paperback
I just finished trudging my way through World of Our Fathers. It reminded me of the badly-written high school history books we had to read in the 1960s: unnecessarily dense, without grace or lyricism, and mostly deadly dull. Add to that a lack of editing and organization that would easily have reduced this bloated 700-page manuscript to two-thirds its size, or less. I stayed with it because my grandparents were all Jewish immigrants of the period that Howe writes about, and my parents the first generation of Americans. But he wanted to talk on and on (and on) about New Yorkers, Yiddish, socialists, and intellectuals, so I didn't see so much of my family.

I borrowed "World of Our Fathers" from the library and just loved it! I never marked as many pages in a book as I did this one. I kept renewing the book because I had so many pages marked I didn't want to lose all those meaningful passages. I finally decided to buy the book, but didn't really expect to get the same edition so I could easily move the markings to my own book. I was so excited to find the exact edition on Amazon in excellent condition and at a great price. The markings have now been moved to my own copy, and I can finally return the book to the library after renewing it at least 10 times!

Disappointed - the bottom of many of the pages are stained orange/brown, which, in my opinion does not constitute "very good."
