My biggest question for Days of Future Past was how the book would handle a super dark storyline (I had read the comics growing up). In the comics, nearly all of the X-Men were killed, and I was curious how this would be presented. To the author's credit, he deftly avoids a lot of the grim stuff. Heroes aren't murdered in a genocidal war, they are just quaintly "defeated." So, if you are like me and was concerned about this book, don't worry on that account.
What we get is a complex story that mirrors the original with less violence. Each chapter switches perspective between the present and the future, so my son had a lot of questions and we talked a lot of some of the cool things about the future. Because the source material is so strong, this book naturally lends itself to discussion with your kids about various issues. So - bonus - a superhero book that makes kids question and think!
In terms of complexity for readers, I'd rate the "Spidey's New Costume" as the least difficult, "The Kree-Skrull War" in the middle, and "Days of Future Past" as the toughest.
I'm happy I purchased this and my son loved it, so I recommend it to you. I hope this review helps you.
