I read Ms.Phillips' account of Europe's development -her rise and now what looks like her fall - with amazement.
I was fascinated by the amount of research and scholarship that undoubtedly went into this book;also, by the skill with which the author guides us through the battles of religious and intellectual efforts to conquer Europe, and through Europe - the world.
Having been born, educated and brought up in Engand, I was especially interested in how all this affected British policy and behaviour up to the modern time.
I am about the same age as Ms. Phillips, and the events she describes are exactly as I remember them. That is to say, the gradual weakening of social obligations; the fuzzing of the division between right and wrong (all that relativism!) ; the confusion and weariness of people too exhausted to put up a fight for what they know to be right.
Luckily, I'm not a nail, since Melanie Phillips has hit the nail right on the head, so many times in this book, that my head would be quite flat by now.
The author is not very optimistic at the end of this book. However, with all the negative aspects of Europe, which we are all aware of and cannot forget, most of us would not like to witness its demise, so let's all make a big effort to keep it alive.
