Traveler (World of Warcraft: Traveler, Book 1) (1) Hardcover – October 25, 2016

4.7 4.7 out of 5 stars 254 ratings

The first epic fantasy novel set in Blizzard's popular World of Warcraft® game franchise. Features a young cast of characters discovering the mysteries and majesty of the world around them.

It's been years since twelve-year-old Aramar Thorne, a clever boy who is never without his precious sketchbook, has seen his father. So when Captain Greydon Thorne comes ashore and asks his son to join him at sea, it feels as if someone has redrawn Aram's entire world. At sea, Aram struggles to get along with the Wavestider's crew--especially second mate Makasa, a tough teenaged girl. Just as Aram starts to get his head above water, a band of vicious pirates attack the Wavestrider, turning his world upside down once again. As Aram and Makasa try to find their way home, they encounter creatures both terrible and wondrous, and Aram will seek to understand Azeroth's denizens as he draws them in his sketchbook. But the journey is hindered by Greydon's compass, which never points north. If the compass isn't leading Aram and Makasa home--to safety--to what destiny is it leading? Includes twenty illustrations from the acclaimed Blizzard artist, Samwise Didier.

Traveler (World of Warcraft: Traveler, Book 1)" is an exciting introduction to a literary series that promises to take readers on an unforgettable journey through the Warcraft universe. With captivating characters, a well-developed world, and an exciting plot, this book is a must-read for both Warcraft fans and those looking for a great fantasy adventure.

Good materials, smooth pages and a sturdy cover, I recommend it.

I bought this book for my 12 year old son. He does not like to read, so it can be a struggle to find something that we can use for literature class (he's home schooled).
He plays WoW and enjoys the game, and has no problem reading the quests or in-game books that are scattered through the world.
He is about half through the book and has asked about future books with these characters.
There is just enough character development at the beginning to give the reader a sense of "who is who" without going into too much drawn out description. The plot goes from one "adventure" to another at a fairly quick pace, so young readers will not get "bored". The interactions Aram (main character) has with others in the book does not seem forced or unrealistic (or old fashioned) regarding thoughts and behaviors.
I also read the book, so we could talk about different parts during lessons. I have to say, as an adult that loves to read, it held my attention and was able to make me laugh at certain parts. I love the way they incorporated Aram's artistic ability into illustrations for the book.

Gave this to my daughter as an early present because she saw me pull it out of the box - was supposed to be a Christmas present. She recently because enthralled with WoW and started playing on her own account instead of using a character on mine (she's 10). She took the book to her room and devoured it in about 3 days. And when she was done, her only complaint was that it ended with an ending that seemed to indicate that there was supposed to be another one in the series and where was it? I'd say that was a successful book. I have not read it myself as it is more geared for the younger generation, but when someone comes away wanting more I'd say it is a good book.

Our daughter (8) enjoyed this book thoroughly. The vocabulary was surprisingly varied and dense for a young adult novel and our daughter had a few hiccups, but it just made me appreciate all the new vocab she was picking up. Other books at this level don't prove challenging at all for her, so it was great that way too.

The book doesn't require a lot of understanding of the Warcraft universe, but it definitely helps with pronunciation, if nothing else. I still play from time to time so I took her through the game and showed her some of my other books to get a better grasp on the universe. She's enthralled. I think this book created another fan.

The characters are diverse and interesting, the writing is excellent, and the story is great so far too. We're looking forward to the next one. When is Greg going to start working on the game's lore? Because he should.

My 10 year old son isn't a lover of books. I had purchased him the first WoW Traveler book as a Christmas gift in the hopes of getting him to read a book based on a video game that he has played.

This is the first time my son has loved a book so much that he goes off to read on his own without being asked to or because it's a school assignment.

If i could give this 10 stars I would. Thank you for helping to inspire my son to be a book lover!

PS: My son keeps asking when the 3rd one will be coming out!

As an adult who plays the game, I enjoyed this book. I listened to the audiobook verison, and it's entertainingly narrated. I look forward to the inevitable sequel (the book clearly ends before the story does).

If you're looking for a gritty book for grownups, this isn't for you. But it's not all fluff, either. There are battles and death, but also a heartwarming side to the main character's development. There's an undercurrent of the "moral of the story", but it's not preachy. The main characters are a human boy and teenaged girl, but devoted Horde players (like me) should still be able to appreciate their story.

It's a solid book for my avid reader 9 year old. We purchased this gift as a Christmas gift last year, and she's read it 3 times since then. It's helped solidify her interest in the Warcraft franchise and lore, something my husband and I are thrilled about, as avid WoW gamers ourselves. We just learned that Blizzard has a second Traveler book on their web store, so I feel like we are going to be making another Traveler book purchase in the near future.

Fun story. Some elements felt a little clunky in the beginning but otherwise it was a great read. Art is fun and easily recognizable as Samwise Didier's work.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Young Adventure set in Azeroth - loved it. More please
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on November 8, 2016
I had the pleasure of meeting both Greg and Samwise at Blizzcon for a Q&A about the book. They graciously signed copies of the book to both my kids.
Storyline is set in Azeroth and really does capture the feeling of it very well. I liked the characters and development of them, Makasa and Aram make a good pairing. The Hidden really do catch the essence of their side of the world very well. That I received the signed books at the weekend, bought the digital copy and read fairly non stop on my return flight from Blizzcon Shows the readability. I really did feel I was folllowing a story in places I know. It's likely that having played since vanilla days that Greg's narrative was familiar all the way (apart from the crossroads outside Lakeshire, where are they? - minor point I couldn't remember). The narrative is aimed at a youthful reader without any dumbing of the phraseology, so that worked very well. My 10yr old is stoked to start reading. And then the bonus, all through the book, both digital and hard copy, there are illustrations by Samwise as the main character (Aram aged 12) would draw them illustrating his journey and the people he meets, brilliant. Samwise joked at the Q&A that someone at Blizzard had asked him to do the illustrations because he drew like a 12yr old, a very competent 12yr old artist for sure ! But a we all know it's takes an immense amount of skill to be good enough to be able to draw convincingly a younger version of your work. In all I loved the book and am slightly hoping that Greg was being conservative that he was finishing chapter 10 of book 2 that night... I kinda need to read book 2 already :) "Good Magic"

4.0 out of 5 stars ein schönes Buch, aber..
Reviewed in Germany on November 8, 2016
