Devany Miller is a divorced, mother of two that works at a shelter that helps abuse/struggling women and children. Oh, and she’s also part witch, part wyndling, part skriven and a few other fun things mixed in for good measure. And did I mention she kicks ass and takes names?
Although you don’t truly need to read this series from the beginning book, The Bazaar, to enjoy the book, it may help in the long run when it comes to understanding Devany’s relationship with the assorted characters and character types that appear in the pages. The author does a sufficient job bringing new readers up to speed, but the book is very fast paced, so someone new really needs to buckle in.
The common theme that runs through this book, as well as the series, is that Devany is trying desparately to save/protect her family…but life has a way of throwing a curveball in your path at times. Devany makes decisions that have broad ranging effects on everyone and everything around her…like a ripple in a pond. Some of those decisions are mistakes, some BIG mistakes, but she owns them and does what she can to fix the mistakes, all while trying to save her family and loved ones and figure out who she is.
Jen Ponce is a very talented author that has a great knack for writing amazingly strong female leads. This book is full of great characters, a brilliantly thoughtout storyline with lots and lots of layers and enough action to keep fans of Fantasy/Urban Fantasy fully satisfied. I highly recommend this book, as well as the rest of the series.
