Before I finally bought this treasure a few weeks ago, whatever I would be doing, whenever "The World at War" came on television and I was in earshot, I'd stop, and watch, and listen. I have hesitated to review it up to now, because I did not think myself possessed of sufficiently exalted speech to praise this remarkably powerful, epic storytelling of World War II; however, I simply have to say something: When this gem from the '70s was produced, there should have been a new word created for "documentary" -- perhaps even for "masterpiece." Every lover of history should acquire this landmark opus.

Definitive WWII Documentary

If you enjoy reading and watching anything about WWII this is a must buy. Produced in Great Britian this is the definitive WWII documentary. It does have a British slant to it but until America or someone else produces a more detatiled account, this is THE documentary to watch about WWII. Sir Lawrence Olivier is a great narrator and lends the dramatic element to it without going overboard. Great interviews with the famous people of WWII to the common citizens who had to endure all the hardships of war.

This is the definitive video of WW2. The narration by Lawrece Olivier is magnificent. All the horrors of that conflict in which 50-60 million people, mostly civilians lost their lives is captured in this outstanding collection. From Pearl Harbor through Stalingrad And Normandy and the holocaust- it is all here. The video and audio are crisp and clear.

This is without a doubt the best television ever....the best documentary ever....and why amongst all others? Because this series was recorded in the late 60's and early 70's and the amount of people alive for discussion in THIS series is beyond compare and will floor you! The heavyweights of WW2 are ALL here and with their inside commentaries! The heavyweights and the complete insiders heretofore unheard of....people to the right of Churchill, Roosevelt and Hitler to name just a few! And Hitlers' people will astonish you! They didn't film it like this before then, and they CAN'T now....as all are dead...this is, was, and will always remain the finest of its' kind of ALL time and an absolute essential if you are to study WW2....buy it, you will not regeret it even for a second...and your childrens children should and will watch this...be certain of it.

Dated but Authoritative

I remembered watching this program as a boy, and remembered it fondly. I had been looking around stores without luck when I checked Amazon and there it was!

I sat down and started watching it again, and as soon as I heard the theme music and Olivier's narration was immediately transported back in time.

This thorough history of WWII begins in the first episode with the rise of the National Socialist party in Germany in the 20's and 30's, then takes us through the Rhineland, Anschluss, Sudetenland, Czechoslovakia and leaves us looking at Danzig.

The second episode takes us into Poland and the start of the war. Each phase of the war is discussed in detail as it navigates its way chronologically, episode by episode, through the entire conflict.

Sir Laurence Olivier's narration is excellent, as is the archival footage.
My only criticisms are directly due to the age of the series - some of the graphics that are used to dramatise explanations between footage (fairly rare) are now quite dated and almost comical. Also, because the series was made so soon after the war, the depiction of historical facts is tilted towards the allies - for instance there is no mention of the genesis of the practice of bombing cities - two or three german aircraft accidentally discharged their bomb loads over London in August 1940, which was an accidental contravention of Hitler's ban on attacking the capital. This led to British bombing of Berlin, and the whole thing escalated from there. (The Hardest Victory, RAF Bomber Command in the Second World War - Denis Richards, Hodder and Stoughton, London 1995 pp82, 83). Facts such as these are not mentioned in this series.

All in all, this series is an excellent historical record of WWII. If only someone could undertake a re-make on such an epic scale, now that many official secrets of the time are de-classified, and graphical technology has improved exponentially, it would be well worth the effort.

Certainly the best of the World War II documentaries

This series was always by far the best ever produced about the Second World War. It is excellent in every way. However, never, ever, should they have altered the original order of episodes. History should be told in the order in which it occured and not haphazardly as this set does. The new episodes they created for this DVD set should all have been at the end of the original series instead of being inserted among the original episodes and with the original episodes mixed up in their order.
Still, it is well worth the price because of it's historical value and the unique and very interesting film content, the excellent interviews, as well as Laurence Olivier's absolutely beautiful narration.
I will always treasure The World At War as I have now for 35 years.
Just four stars because of the alteration of the order of the original episodes.
