With the world situation as challenging as it is today, especially the fear of war and terrorism, this book is truly prophetic. Sheen presents powerful insights into how Our Lady can help us in dealing with the problems in today's world. Among his many books, Sheen cherished this book as his personal favorite! --Fr. Andrew Apostoli, CFR

About the Author

The life and teachings of Venerable Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen anticipated and embodied the spirit of both the Second Vatican Council and the New Evangelization. A gifted orator and writer, he was a pioneer in the use of media for evangelization: His radio and television broadcasts reached an estimated 30 million weekly viewers. He also wrote more than 60 works on Christian living and theology, many of which are still in print. Born in 1895, Sheen grew up in Peoria, Illinois, and was ordained a priest for the diocese in 1919. He was ordained an auxiliary bishop in New York City in 1951. As the head of his mission agency, the Society for the Propagation of the Faith (1950 1966), and as Bishop of Rochester (1966-1969), Sheen helped create 9,000 clinics, 10,000 orphanages, and 1,200 schools; and his contributions educated 80,000 seminarians and 9,000 religious. Upon his death in 1979, Sheen was buried at St. Patrick's Cathedral in New York. His cause for canonization was returned to his home diocese of Peoria in January 2011, and Sheen was proclaimed "Venerable" by Pope Benedict XVI on June 28, 2012. The first miracle attributed to his intercession was approved in March 2014, paving the way for his beatification.

One of the most compelling, beautifully written books I have ever experienced! It should be read by every Christian. Jesus loved His mother, and, by His own law, obligated Himself to honor Mary; this is a truth that each one of us must confront. If Jesus was obligated to honor Mary, then so is each Christian. No one is better than Fulton Sheen at delving into the history of the salvation plan and Mary's role in it from the moment of man's fall. Following Sheen through his understanding of scripture and of the mysterious, delicate realities of God's creation of Mary and her vocation will open the eyes of the reader to a far broader understanding of our salvation. We may just gain a glimpse into the meaning of Gabriel's words when he addressed Mary, "Hail, full of grace!"

Fulton J. Sheen, like John Paul II, was unequivocally devoted to the Blessed Mother. This book is proof of that and, like so many of Sheen's works, it easily stands up to rereading many times over.

This is an wonderful book about Mary and about women and femininity in general. I would highly recommend it for it's ideas about Mary as a role model for true feminism and the dignity of women. A real gem!

Fulton Sheen has overwhelmingly impressed me and I'm only halfway through this book! Written in 1952, it's amazing how prescient his words are for our time and how his teaching is needed as much today as it was when he was alive.

What a wonderful book, spiritually enlightening with just the right temper of theology and easy to understand. Our Blessed Mother knows more about our own sufferings, anguish, heartaches and loss then we can imagine. She experienced all of these things as Simeon had foretold, "and a sword shall pierce thy heart".

Chapter 5 was my favorite chapter; "All Mothers Are Alike - Save One." Bishop sheen writes "If Mary were the mother of any other man, then she could not also be our mother, because the ties of the flesh are too exclusive. Flesh allows only one mother. The step between a mother and a stepmother is long, and few there are who can make it. But Spirit allows another mother. Since Mary is the mother of God, then she can be the mother of everyone whom Christ redeemed. The key to understanding Mary is this: We do not start with Mary. We start with Christ, the Son of the Living God!...Never will it be found that anyone who really loves Our Lord as a Divine Savior dislikes Mary. Those who dislike any devotion to Mary are those who deny His Divinity or find fault with Our Lord because of what He says about hell, divorce and judgement."

This book was originally published in 1952 and it's amazing after 50 plus years, Bishop Sheen is still speaking to us and leading us to Christ.

Happy Mother's Day - mothers everywhere in Heaven and on Earth.
If you never understood why Mary is such a favorite, if you never got why so many people pray for her help, if you ever got irritated that she's so popular and beloved...
You'll understand after listening to this man named Fulton share his love letter to Our Holy Queen. I quickly fell in love and into devotion to Mary, and I finally joined those who already knew who she is and was always meant to be: "Woman - behold your son... behold your Mother."

"The Church was spread throughout the Roman Empire before a single book of the New Testament was written.... [T]wo - and only two - of the Twelve left a Gospel.... The Church was an organic body of cohesion, the source of unity and authority.... If we had lived in the first twenty-five years of the Church, how would we have answered the question: "How can I know what I am to believe?" We could not have said, "I will look in the Bible". For there was no New Testament Bible then. We would have believed what the Apostolic Church was teaching.... When finally the Gospels were written, they recorded a tradition, they did not create it.... The Gospels did not start the Church; the Church started the Gospels.... The Church did not come to believe in the Virgin Birth because the Gospels tell us there is a Virgin Birth; it was because the living word of God in His Mystical Body already believed it that they set it down in the Gospels.... The Apostles' Creed [which specifically mentions the Virgin Birth] was an accepted formula in the Church around the year 100.... There is not *one* single quotation from the Gospels in the Creed.... And this much is certain: if the Apostles, who lived with Our Lord and who heard Him speak on the open hills and in the temple - who listened to Him preach on the Kingdom of God forty days after His Resurrection - did not teach the Virgin Birth, *no one else would have taught it*.... The real reason for incredulity is that the attack on the Virgin Birth is a subtle attack on the Divinity of Christ" (pp. 54-65).

Bishop Sheen outdoes himself here. Protestants who thoughtlessly have imbibed negligence or, may God forbid, irreverence to the Blessed Mother of Jesus Christ would do well to consult this work.
