The World's a Stage (Regency Charades Book 5) Kindle Edition
All the world’s a stage for Peter Barton, a wandering actor now posing as a gentleman in Regency high society. But his carefree existence is jeopardized when a matchmaking mama tries to snare him for her dowdy daughter. To avoid entanglement and exposure, Peter needs a mistress – or at least someone willing to play the part.
The stage is no place for a lady, but when proper young lady Amy Greenlow is left destitute with a young sister to support, she dares to reinvent herself as the actress “Amadora” and takes the London stage by storm. But all Society knows that actresses are women of no virtue, and a ruthless Marquis is determined to make Amadora his latest mistress and won’t take no for an answer. To discourage his advances, Amy agrees to play another part, that of Peter Barton’s mistress.
For Peter and Amy, the public performance of their pretend affair is the role of a lifetime. Falling in love was never part of the plan.
If you like your Regencies sweet, lighthearted and funny, with unconventional characters you’ll long remember, you’ll love The World’s a Stage.

About the author

Joyce Harmon has been from one side of the galaxy to the other (slight exaggeration) and seen a lot of strange stuff (very true). Since retiring from the Navy, she has worked as a winery tour guide, a journalist for a local newspaper, selling collectibles on eBay, and making candles - and always, always, a writer. She shares her rural Virginia home with two haughty and indolent cats and one clever, busy dog, and is haunted by a noisy crowd of characters, all clamoring to be written down and set loose into the world. She accommodates them as quickly as she can. She is the author of the Passatonnack Winery mysteries, and the Regency Charades series of Regency romances. Mary Bennet and the Bingley Codex is the first novel of the Regency Mage series, historic fantasy starring Mary Bennet, the studious and overlooked middle daughter of Pride and Prejudice. Other books in the series include Mary Bennet and the Wickham Artifact, out now, and soon to be released: Mary Bennet and the Beast of Rosings Park, and Mary Bennet and the Shades of Pemberley.
Joyce blogs occasionally at http://joyceharmon.wordpress.com/ , mostly about her dog.

Our hero is Peter Barton, a bachelor, who is amused by his cronies proclaiming the merits of Amadora, a new actress. Although Peter is not a wealthy man, he is comfortably well off and is subjected to the attentions of matchmaking mamas.
The gist of the story, then, is Peter proposing to Amadora, who is subjected to men intent on being her protector, that she become his pretend mistress, thus solving both of their problems.
The storyline is delightful and the characters are perfectly portrayed. There is enough meat on the story to keep the reader's interest.

Hero Peter Barton is accepted at all the upper-class gentlemen's clubs and all the ton doings. He's not titled but he is managing a good enough life financed by his card-counting gambling and savvy investments. He dresses very well, has intelligent conversation and appears to be a man of the world. But Peter has a secret. He's not a gentleman. He's an actor from a long line of actors in his family background. Everything is going swimmingly as long as matchmaking mamas don't ask him too many questions about his past.
Our heroine is a beautiful and talented actress named Amadora, whom all the men drool over and want as their mistress. But Amadora has a secret. She's really well-bred gentlewoman Amy Greenlow, whose reduced circumstances have forced her to earn a living to support herself and her younger sister. Too pretty to be a governess and not wishing to be a maid, she doesn't find many options open to her.
Add to the mix a jaded, unpleasant marquess who's obsessed with the beautiful actress and wants to make her his. So Peter needs protection from the matchmaking mamas and Amadora needs protection from the jaded marquess. What to do but agree to feign a protector/actress relationship.
Not everything goes to plan. The marquess is quite obsessed and jealous and causes major problems. And Amy has no knowledge of who Peter really is and even has a misplaced idea about his sexual orientation. And things happen that may bring their secrets to the light of day.
How can things be resolved? Will the outed secrets destroy our H and h? Will they find happiness? Is there a chance for respectability in Amy's life and can Peter maintain his facade of respectability? Well, read to find out. This has the usual Harmon charm, some humorous moments, and is a pleasant read and a sweet romance. (There are a few typos in this edition but not enough to hinder its reading.)
