If you like music. If you like success. If you love the NYC Metro area. If you lived in the area in the 80's and 90's and even today, this is a great documentary to watch. How to succeed? Be different. Scott Shannon is a legend in the Radio and Music worlds and he got it right when he came to New York City. Not many in any industry or business have gone from "worst to first". If they had, it certainly wasn't in 74 days! This is a remarkable story that is a "must see" for those who have listened (and continue to listen) to radio, music, drive time radio. Scott is a funny, kind and an icon in his industry and New York was fortunate that he moved from Tampa to Secaucus and continues to entertain on the air today.

I've never been a fan of the Morning Zoo format, but the story behind it was quite intriguing and colourful. The film is more of a radio documentary rather than about the station and music which some of the other reviews are claiming its lacking.

If you're interested in the format and radio stories, this is great; if you're looking for something else, you may be disappointed.

Growing up in that era, I was hoping to get insights into how a Top 40 station grew it's popularity in radio's ultra competitive top market and to take a fun, nostalgic journey of the 1980s. Instead, this 64 minute "documentary" focuses on morning man and program director Scott Shannon and reveals nothing new. Coincidentally, Shannon's wife is the Executive Producer of this vanity project. While it was perhaps intentional given the era of the subject, the production quality and graphics of this film is that of a 1984 cable access station, except with the use of what appears to be Zoom and/or iPhone video interviews. We see blurry video snippets of Shannon's "morning zoo," in an overcrowded studio, complete with slide whistles, obnoxious callers and the ubiquitous drum cymbal. In interviews with Bon Jovi, Nile Rodgers and Joan Jett, the musicians talk about how their music being played on Z100 was exciting, but not why it was more exciting than it being heard on every other Top 40 station in the country. Despite the former radio jocks talking about how the Z100 t-shirts were "everywhere" in New York City, there isn't one picture of one fan to illustrate it. Nor are any former listeners included to explain why the cacophony of Shannon's station was so important to them. In the 80s radio stations around the US started copying the "Morning Zoo" format after Z100 began to dominate the local ratings, and most failed. Other than being literally louder than the other stations on the dial, don't expect to learn what Z100's secret of success was in this documentary.

an Expert telling of the history of radio and how scott shannon conquered NY. Good thing he didn't get Stuck at Stuckey's on his way up here! :) Radio needs to have a budget again, so it can compete with TV and other forms of entertainment. it's still worthy of being saved and re invented.
