Kai Strand's story Worth the Effort: Ella's Story is a journey of friendship and love. Even though it's a shorter piece, I still loved how well-developed and nuanced the emotions between Ella and Ayden are. As a reader, I enjoyed getting to know both characters as they got to know each other. Can't wait to read the next one!
WORTH THE EFFORT – ELLA’S STORY, a YA novella by Author Kai Strand, is the story of seventeen-year-old Ella Jones who lives with her mother since her parents’ are divorced. She doesn’t really like her mother or father; she suspects they don’t care for her, either, and she definitely does not want to be like them. Early one morning when Ella arrives at the restaurant where she works, she discovers a homeless boy about her age. Her first reaction is fear, which would probably be true of most of us. Ella doesn’t know that meeting the boy, Ayden, will soon change her life in ways she could never imagine.
Kai Strand has created characters that are so real they might be teens in your town, searching for meaning to their lives. Ella learns so much about not only Ayden but about herself as well. As much as I like Ella and cheered her own, Ayden is my favorite character. He’s a mystery; he’s kind and gentle; he’s unpredictable and constantly puzzles Ella. Ms. Strand has captured both teens’ personalities just right. WORTH THE EFFORT- ELLA’S STORY is a story of family, love, and recognizing what is truly valuable in life. This novella would make a great addition to schools to perhaps help students see that our first impressions of a person sometimes are wrong . Be sure and pick up a copy for your own private library, as well. I’m happy to know we’ll meet Ella and Ayden again. Can’t wait.
Not only are the two stories quite different, but the voice she uses for each character is unique.
Ella is a teenager working downtown where she opens a restaurant in the early morning hours. To do this she must enter through an alley. One early morning (before dawn) she finds a homeless teenage boy sleeping next to a dumpster in the alley. At first this frightens her, but she soon realizes he doesn't intend to harm her. That's when she decides to befriend the homeless teen.
Ella is a strong and independent character. Her mother is a real estate tycoon with high society expectations for her daughter, but Ella rebelled, insisting on attending public school and working for her own money at the restaurant. I have to wonder what her mother would have said about Ella entering a dark alley to get to work each day.
Though this is just a novella, I felt like Kai Strand really captured the essence of her characters. In just a short time, she was able to show the growth and development of Ella. I definitely recommend this emotional story to all fans of realistic Young Adult fiction.
