2016 Carol Award Winner for Historical Romance
A teacher on the run. A bounty hunter in pursuit. Can two enemies learn to trust each other before they both lose what they hold most dear?
Stone Hammond is the best tracker in Texas. He never comes home empty-handed. So when a wealthy railroad investor hires him to find his abducted granddaughter, Stone eagerly accepts.
Charlotte Atherton, former headmistress of Sullivan's Academy for Exceptional Youths, will do anything to keep her charges safe, especially the orphaned girl entrusted to her care. Charlotte promised Lily's mother she'd keep the girl away from her unscrupulous grandfather, and nothing will stop Charlotte from fulfilling that pledge. Not even the handsome bounty hunter with surprisingly honest eyes who comes looking for them.
When Miss Atherton produces documentation that shows her to be Lily's legal guardian, Stone must reevaluate everything he's been led to believe. Is she villain or victim?
Then a new danger forces Charlotte to trust the man sent to destroy her. Stone vows to protect what he once sought to tear apart. Besides, he's ready to start a new pursuit: winning Charlotte's heart.

The prim and proper headmistress of a school for gifted children in Houston, Texas tries to protect several of her students when the school is unexpectedly closed. The devious grandfather of a little girl sends bounty hunters to find her. One of those bounty hunters gets more than he bargained for when he discovers the group in hiding.
The characters were fun, and even the bad guys had some good lines. Some action moved the story along, including a runaway wagon scene. There were some laughs, too, which were a pleasant surprise to me. The love story seemed a little sudden, but what do I know? Set aside your accuracy meter and just let go.
No bad language, no sex, not much violence, and a nice love story with children involved.
Unfortunately, one of the children, Lily Dorchester, is the object of a "retriever's" search. Stone Hammond is being paid by Lily's grandfather to return her to the grandfather's home. However, when Stone finds Lily and Charlotte, he doesn't find the kidnapper he anticipated. Charlotte, on the other hand, begins to see Stone as more than a cold, calloused bounty hunter. Will these two adults learn to be honest, open, and forgiving to work together for the benefit of the children?
Witemeyer makes the most of metaphors and similes to draw beautiful, captivating word pictures. The storyline, the characters, and the strong writing combine to make for a refreshing read.
A quotable, so relevant to my life, and many others, I'm sure:
"...one could choose joy even in times of despair. God's blessings were so prevalent, a person could always find a way to rejoice. One simply had to trust God enough to leave her problems at His feet and open her eyes to the blessings already provided."
Well said, and well-written, Karen Witemeyer!!
I loved Stone. He's strong and uncompromising when it comes to injustice, but he takes time to listen and he's wise. He's strong enough to fight several men at once, but tender enough to hold a child...or offer a woman a shoulder to lean on. At first glance, Charlotte is an exacting schoolmarm, but upon closer inspection you find a woman with a heart big enough to give up her dreams for the welfare of three young children. The characters of the children are well developed in this story.
Charlotte Atherton goes into attack mode when Stone Hammond shows up on her property. The man exudes strength and determination, and Charlotte does her best to display bravado when in fact, the man terrifies her. After presenting documentation of her guardianship, she invites Stone to remain while he verifies her information with Texas Rangers. When it becomes clear that Stone is not the only retriever on Lily's trail, Stone knows that he must earn Charlotte's trust and earn it quickly if they are going to keep Lily and the other two children in Charlotte's safe-keeping, protected from a man bent on using his granddaughter for nefarious gain. What Stone never expected was to lose his heart in the process.
Will the trail worn tracker and the lovely teacher be able to put aside their differences and trust their future to the One who never fails or forsakes? Stone is convinced that it is worth the pursuit. Another delightful, romantic and engaging story from Karen Witemeyer!
