Basically, her magical heirloom necklace is stolen, and if she doesn't get it back within a week her aunt's ghost will suffer. The same day, an ordinary person unintentionally raises an unstoppable zombie. The rest of the plot is a fun mixture of events that result, as she searches desperately for her heirloom necklace. There are werewolves, mages, premonitions of doom, spells that backfire, the town gossip, ghosts, vampires, an utterly charming cat familiar, and a plot that moves along quickly enough that you can't get bored.
Warning: the leading lady is immature and selfish when dealing with her beaus. She refused to acknowledge her own poor behavior. That is fairly realistic, but still annoying. She and her boyfriend married too young, then divorced at her insistence because he insisted on spending time with people other than her (the nerve!) like his male friends (how outrageous...no actually that was pretty healthy behavior) and he doesn't believe she in magic (inevitable, since she stupidly refuses to give him proof). Now they are dating again. I particularly disliked her having sex with another guy while dating another ex-husband, ghost possession notwithstanding. No expression of regret, and it is obvious from later comments that she'd have done it anyway. The ex-husband deserves a much better woman.
Worth the read for the humor, which is consistently there throughout the book.
I am giving this book four stars instead of five not because it doesn't deserve five overall, but because there are some minor problems with the plotting (a common problem for new writers), characters are a bit lacking in development, and some of the dialogue could have been better edited. However, this book is well worth the purchase price.
It is more of a detective story than a romance and while it is a stand alone book it does leave things such that follow up books will work. No cliffhangers to stuff up your reading.
Recommended for anyone with a bit of a paranormal bent and want something light to read.
