About the Author

Dr. Seuss is quite simply the most beloved children’s book author of all time. His real name was Theodore Geisel. On books he wrote to be illustrated by others, he used the name Theo. LeSieg, which is Geisel spelled backwards.

Roy McKie is the illustrator of many books, among them In a People House, by Dr. Seuss writing as Theo. LeSieg. He lives in Flemington, New Jersey.

Usually, youngsters are the ones asking US questions ("But why, Grandma?" "Why not, Grandma?), but this neat book turns the questions around on them, and encourages their imaginations at the same time it teaches them to think things through, and express WHY they think something. What a great concept by Theodor Geisel (aka Dr. Seuss)! This book is actually written under one of the pen names used by Geisel for books he authored but didn't illustrate, Theo. LeSieg (Geisel spelled backward). Roy McKie is the illustrator of this colorful book, which asks questions such as, "Tell me! Would you rather be a Dog... or be a Cat? It's time for you to think about important things like that. Would you rather be a Bullfrog... or be a Butterfly? Which one would you rather be? Come on, now. Tell me why." The simple words, rhymes, rhythms and questions, complemented by the colorful, cartoonish illustrations, make this such a fun tool in teaching kids to "use their noggins"!

Have to say that at this stage of the game, I have a much deeper internal reservoir of patience when it comes to my grandsons' questions than I probably did when I was a young mother of two sons, having to answer their seemingly endless inquiries at the end of a long day working outside of the home, fixing dinner, giving baths, etc. It's been such a wonderful opportunity to have a "do-over" of that time in my life, babysitting my grandsons for these past almost six years. Both Grandpa and I are delighted (and amused) by their questions, which reflect a wonderful curiosity and interest in learning! When it came time for our younger grandson's first Christmas, he was just 9 months old.

"Tell me! Would you rather be a dog... or a cat? It's time for you to think about important things like that." This is how the wonderful book Would you Rather be a Bullfrog starts off. Throughout the book the reader is questioned on what they would rather be, and a cat and dog is just the beginning. By the time you've finished reading the book you've been asked if `you'd rather have a feather or a bushy tail behind', whether you'd rather be a minnow or a whale, a hammer or a nail.
This story is told in rhyme, the standard for all Dr. Seuss books. The pictures are all bright and colorful, and the book is quite straightforward; it comes right out and asks you things, no beating around the bush for it! I think this is a wonderful book in part because it can be so much fun imagining which out of the options provided you'd rather be. Another thing that makes it a wonderful book is the special charm all Dr. Seuss books have.

Adorable book. A favorite at our house and one we often give as a gift. Easy read for new readers. Has words parents can actually pronounce (vs some more complex Dr Seuss books) and makes for good discussions ("I'd rather be the butterfly because . . .")

Cece and Tarzan are 9 and 5 years of age and they created a book review for this Dr. Suess classic, Would You Rather Be a Bullfrog? (Bright & Early Books(R)).

To sum up the video review, Cece and Tarzan like this book because it asks a lot of questions like "Would you rather be a cat or a dog?" They thought the story and the pictures were interesting, and they said they would definitely read it again and again.

So, if you want to know if your kid is too old to enjoy this book, a 9-year-old girl and a 5-year-old boy think it's just the right blend of humor and adventure to make them want to read it again. They both give it 5 stars.
