Anne mentions the interesting topic of Christians who are devoted to God, but have no church home because of painful wounds that they were given by Christians at their previous church. She calls them Christian Exiles. I was so surprised to read that lots of other Christians have experienced this problem too. I’m glad that she talked about that in the book because I don’t know anyone besides myself who went through that.
So if you have been wounded by Christians and are finding it hard to move on, please read the book. I hope it helps.
The author states that this was a painful book to write. She has had deep wounds inflicted by God's people & no sooner was one wound healed than another was inflicted. She determined that she would remain faithful to God & continue to seek a personal relationship with Him no matter how hurt & rejected she was by God's so called people. She ran to God not from God when she was forced to leave the church on several occasions. She ran into the arms of a loving God who knows her name & cares for her. She urges people not to turn from God in anger when they feel rejected & mistreated because these people, the wounders, are but a poor reflection of God. You can run from God's people, but you cannot run from God. He is always there waiting for you to cry out to Him. He is a God who sees & hears you, knows your name, & who cares for YOU & who will treat you compassionately & with tenderness if you will let Him.
Everyone has been wounded. Life is hard. The first step to recovery is to admit your pain. You can only be healed when you forgive those who have wronged you. Forgiveness is a choice. Forgiveness is a gift that you give yourself so that you can be freed & then you can move on to experience the blessings in life that God has for you. When wronged, you are to pray & not retaliate thus ending the cycle of abuse. The wounded become wounders themselves if they are not careful. You are commanded to forgive 70 x 7 times. Forgiveness is an act of worship that is to be followed up with a sacrificial act to free you of bitterness. You are to forgive & be reconciled if possible & then move on. You are not to look back & revisit your hurts. You cannot move forward if you are driving backward. You cannot get bogged down by wondering what might have been. You might not have the life that you expected & planned for, but you must continue to look forward to receive the blessings that God has in store for you.
Remember that Jesus knows what it is like to be rejected by his own people-the very ones that he came to save. He was betrayed, arrested, stripped & beaten, mocked & utterly humiliated without retalliating & saying one unkind word. In fact, he forgave those who had wronged him as he hung dying on an old wooden cross. Jesus died because he loved sinners (the wounders & the wounded, the inner circle & the outcasts without discretion). You are to forgive because you have been forgiven. You are to love your enemies. You are to show your love by your actions. Let go of whatever is holding you back & move forward to receive your best life that God has for you.
