I bought this book not being sure if there would be enough content to justify the price. This book is great! There is a very small section on basics, which I like since some books include so much basic information that it takes up half the book. There are all kinds of interesting techniques and great color photos of the weavings. I recommend this book if you are interested in weaving that is beyond ordinary.

Woven Textile Design is a big, beautifully illustrated idea book for weavers. From plain weave on two shafts to 16 shaft draft ideas, Jan Shenton doesn't leave anyone out in the cold. For me, the highlights of this book are warp and weft distortions, extra warp and weft patterning, seersucker, patterned double weave and weaving horizontal pleats (not for the faint of heart). There are plenty of other techniques and ideas presented in addition to those mentioned, making it suitable for weavers of all levels of experience to learn something new. The book is loaded with color illustrations of lively and interesting handwoven cloth, plenty of weaving drafts and details such as sett and denting advice. One caution; since the author is English, you will find that warp calculations are metric.

I was really excited about this book but was disappointed in the lack of design methods. Guess it would be great for a beginning weaver as she goes over all the basic structure of weaves. 5 pages of design information and all the rest on different weaving structures. Most of the pages prior to to those 5 pages is also basic weaving that can be found in multiple books already published. Will either sell, donate or give this one away.

A new one on me.......

This isn't a book I had seen or heard of:not one in circulation around my weaving friends, but thought it was worth a punt. It is a well considered book, some nice basic stuff for beginners, well observed and illustrated and usefully builds up to more technical details and pattern suggestions. It's a weaving manual, so I haven't worked through all of it yet, but it looks very promising and pitched at the right level to take a beginner through to competent waving - and understanding weave structure.

This is a total inspirational weaving book. It covers structures such as plain weave, honeycomb, mock, twills and double cloth and encourages the weaver to experiment and stretch their own boundaries. The photographs enhance the idea of experimentation and the diagrams are clear.
