Opened a ticket w/ WowWee, things were looking good initially (after the rep asked if we were SURE the screws weren't there, yep, we're SURE the screws weren't in the package) but now it's been 10 days- rep at WowWee isn't responding and my kid can't fly his drone that he saved up to buy. Very, very disappointed.
The interface is less than intuitive - very future-looking, but confusing. She has an android device, and when she tried to fire up the drone, it wanted her to download a firmware update first. Not a big deal, but the update hung repeatedly. We had to use an iOS device to get the firmware update completed. We also noticed there was a difference in response time between an Android and iOS device - the iOS was definitely faster.
The drone flies pretty well, and is essentially like every RC drone out there in this price range. However, both the car and drone are built *very* well, and put up with quite a few crashes. I was sure one or two of them would result in a broken propeller at the very least, but they just kept going. The battery life for the drone is about 15 minutes, which isn't too bad. I'm not sure if they sell extra batteries for the drone, but if they do, I'd suggest getting one.
The car is fun to drive, and once you get the hang of it, you can pull off some pretty cool stunts. It needs a flat, smooth surface, and does not run well (or at all) on carpet. Speaking of which, if you're going to use these to fight each other, you'll need a large, open, smooth area for both of them. A living room probably wouldn't do very well. My daughter and I took them outside on our basketball court, and they ran fine there. There was no wind, so no problems with the drone outside of the pilot learning curve, and the car ran fine. We did notice when the sun hit the court, the laser tag feature didn't work as well.
Overall, it's a very cool concept, but it definitely needs some work (dumbing down?), considering the audience this is intended for.
You will need a lot of room for these cars, as they are quick and sometimes unpredictable. Small objects will not be much for the cars to knock out of the way, but they can get caught on small ledges, and stuck under short couches.
Due to the fact the front wheels are plastic, and the car turns by the rear wheels alone (the two back wheels are separate motors), the car will bounce and slide a lot on tile, concrete, and can be VERY loud. The clearance of the car is too low for high pile carpet... so your best terrain is on very low pile carpet where the car will have enough traction to move about, and not loud at all. Its a lot of fun!
Your best bet is to run the cars with an iOS device. Bluetooth is what is used to control the cars, and Android devices seem to have a bit of lag. That and the controls on the iOS seem a bit more refined than that on Android. Honestly, I would like to be able to control the car with a gamepad, but more than one bluetooth device would be a bit much to handle.
The cars feel solid, have a long battery life, and are impressive in AI control mode!
