What am I about to disclose may have both positive and negative feedback. First of all, I had one similar when I was a youngster, didn't know what it was or how to use it. It did not have any instructions, I did realize later on that it is a calculator (no problem). Is there an instruction manual for this model? I have viewed some Youtube videos and saw some instruction but not sure how and why they number the beads. Their demo has one "heavenly" side and mine has two. For instance their heavenly side is equivalent to 5, mine are 5 and 10 respectively. It is worth keeping for the nostalgia if nothing else. I saw a video on a much simpler child size or child usable and is quite simpler to use.

I really like this abacus. I bought this version, 2 bead and 5 bead (Chinese), over the 1 bead and 4 bead model (Japanese) because a friend of mine said it was easier to learn on. The one I received is very sturdy and stained in a light color.

I use these to teach my kids math so I'm not losing manipulatives. I think I will be getting a variety of abacus because my older child is starting to master this version so I may upgrade him to the more efficient 1 & 4 version. My younger child is really struggling with the concept of the 5 bead, so I may also get a Danish abacus that has 10 beads.

This abacus is very basic. It does not have alternate colors for 100; 100,000; 100,000,000; etc., nor does it have a reset button. However, it's sturdy, easy to slide the beads, and a cheap experiment to teach my kids math.

Overall, I'm very pleased with this purchase. It's very basic and affordable for those that want to test the waters using an abacus.

It's an abacus, and it's designed to be used like an abacus. Unlike, and I can't believe this even needs clarification, but unlike all the other "abacuses" (abaci?) here, this one is actually big enough to use, has enough rows to count up more digits than a calculator, and isn't secretly a keychain or good luck charm. No pseudo-mystical bulls***, just a pre-electronic calulator for the old fashioned or unnecessarily technical. The only thing I could complain about is how the bottom row has one bead too many. There isn't much use for 5 beads when you already have a special bead to indicate 5.

Word of warning: you should probably avoid these like the plague if you have anything resembling OCD or autism. Once you learn how to actually count with them and do basic math, it could potentially become a compulsion. I had figured out how to do exponents and long division with it before my boss took it away three days later.

Not overly fancy but certainly functional and fun to learn on. I'm fine with the quality of this for the price.

I bought a couple Japanese versions (4+1 beads, as opposed to the Chinese 5+2) for our older son to use, since I figured it would be easier for him to learn on. I don't see 3rd-graders needing the hexadecimal capability of the Chinese abacus, but for my own use this is just fine.

Bought this along with the Paul Green book, which has been a great guide. I don't see the need to buy the Japanese version in addition though as I expect the concepts are the same.

Have worked my way through addition, subtraction, and multiplication. Division next! I think the abacus is a great way to go not just for students but anyone who enjoys math and learning new concepts (new to me, at least--it's pretty cool these things have around for centuries!).
