The story is pretty simple in itself: The Sheridan family as they live and work in a world crushed by a deadly contagious disease that wiped out much of humanity in the recent past.
But, when you take such a simple thought and then throw it into a realistic look at what it takes to do that in a beautifully rendered, but harsh, landscape and toss in the unpredictable that will always come you get a truly engaging read. I had a very hard time putting it down and blazed through it, missing some sleep in the process.
I genuinely enjoyed Tiger as a character. He's fully fleshed out and utterly believable as a person. His interactions with others and his worries arouse sympathy in the reader and allow one to really root for him to win. I didn't feel the same level of connection with the wife and most female characters but that is primarily because they weren't the focus in the same way Tiger was. I'm hoping for a bigger role for them in the next book. I'd really like to hear more of them.
If I go into too much detail on the secondary characters, I'll give away some of the story, so I'll be circumspect with them. There are a host of these characters rolling into the story but not once will a reader get them mixed up and confused as so often happens with a large cast. One of the girls in particular...not saying which!...is a hoot and I sure hope we see more of her later. Ditto for the "guests" at the end.
This is independent fiction well worth the buying. Very few errors were found. Certainly, no more than are found in the big publishing houses nowadays.Read more ›
I found this book to be a true adventure novel with plenty of battle scenes but also a cerebral exercise with emotions and human feelings in the fore front. Without giving the ending away it begs for book 2 and others to follow. I hope to hear about it soon.
I'm a slow reader and finished this in just 3 days (with 2 kids and Christmas in the mix, that's saying something).
My wife was subjected to a constant response of "Oh man, this is such a good spot, can it wait?".
She's reading it now, and will get me back for sure.
Really great things about the book.
The author did his best to limit profanity but kept things real.
The book makes you think about the long term perspectives of not just surviving but what's needed to thrive.
The pace is fast, the characters were easy to relate to, and the story was very engaging.
It is a solid book to give as a gift to veteran preppers and to others who need a wake-up call that won't beat them over the head.
Bottom line - it was a really well written story that was a lot of fun to read.
I highly recommend this book for all audiences.
