This author is a true master of gut-wrenching situations and cut-to-the-bone character development. Each of her previous books taught me to expect more than the usual emotional investment, but this book goes way beyond any of the previous ones. Not an us-against-the-world crime story, not a get-to-know-each-other romance either; this story may be built on a romance with an HEA but it also delves into the supporting characters in a way that few authors ever bother with and gives us such a visceral reading adventure that you can't help but be changed by the experience.
I wanted to hate Anthony, but really I could only sympathize with him and how his life was knocked off the rails. I wanted to rage against Charlie, but I could really understand her need to believe in her own illusions. I wanted to see Ellie as strong and independent, but instead it was if she was a real person, warts and all, struggling to figure out life like the rest of us are doing. I wanted to see Todd as a book boyfriend, but like Ellie, he was too real, to unsure of himself and what he wanted out of life. This is the beauty of Gabi Moore's writing - she creates characters and environments that are too real to be fiction. Some books are a quick, light read like a frothy frozen dessert; in comparison this book is a five-star seven-course meal that stays with you for days.
If you like to completely disappear into a great book to the exclusion of all aspects of your real life, then this book is a must-read. I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.
What I like most is that I never know what the story will be about. All books in the series are romances but aside from that all of them are completely different. This time an unfortunate cruise ship accident provided the background to the story. This setting was very extraordinary. I liked how I got to read all the main characters' POV. Also liked the epilogue where I got a glimpse of the future of the characters.
Good story, very good writing. Standalone, HEA. Recommend to read.
The best part was the other stories in this boxed set. The characters are all different from each other and have plenty of sexual tension and unexpected plot twists. One has a reporter and a billionaire, another has a university student and her teacher, another is about a couple who are struggling to fall pregnant. There are more bonus stories that cant be easily summed up in a line or two.
