'Perfect for summer reading.'

About the Author

Mark Chisnell writes the kind of stories that keep you turning the pages on holiday, and still thinking about them when you get back to work ...
The books include the Kindle chart-topping thrillers - The Defector, The Wrecking Crew and The Fulcrum Files - as well as award-winning works of non-fiction. He's a former professional sportsman and also works as a broadcaster and journalist, writing for some of the world's leading magazines and newspapers, including Esquire and the Guardian.
Probably Mark's greatest achievement was hitch-hiking to Mt Everest base-camp in Tibet. In training shoes. Or maybe that was the stupidest.

THE WRECKING CREW is a sequel to The Defector, although the two are self-contained and can be read separately. There's only a brief reference in the former to the events in the latter.

In THE DEFECTOR, the reader was introduced to an iniquitous character named Janac, apparently once a member of an elite U.S. special forces outfit, who's taken up a life of vicious criminality and drug dealing in Southeast Asia. A student of sorts of human nature, Janac revels in forcing cruel mental choice games onto more or less innocent individuals that, through bad luck and circumstance, fall within his orbit of power and control. In THE DEFECTOR, the unwilling participant was a former London currency trader named Martin who'd escaped to Thailand after a career gone wrong, and the game involved something called the Prisoner's Dilemma. I gave that book four stars.

The somewhat unique nature of this pair of novels is that it's Janac, the Bad Guy Extraordinaire, whom author Mark Chisnell carries forward into the second installment.

THE WRECKING CREW takes place some 6-7 years after THE DEFECTOR. Janac has now taken up piracy on the high seas, and his unwilling game-player is Phillip Hamnet, the captain of a cargo ship taken over by Janac and his gang. In short, while Phillip manages to escape capture while the rest of his crew is murdered, his pregnant wife, who was along for the boat ride, is taken hostage by Janac and carried off to his home base. With her in his power, Janac forces Phillip to make ruthless choices. How Phillip deals with his dilemma is the book's plot.

In contrast to Mark of the first installment, the reader may find Hamnet a more sympathetic Good Guy.

Mark Chisnell's The Wrecking Crew is an old-fashioned adventure yarn with marine elements and some high-tech twists. The story is very straightforward, if at times far-fetched, but well-paced. If you like plain adventure narrative, this book is for you. If you want more out of your reading experience, you may want to look elsewhere. The prose is no more than competent, and the few attempts at metaphorical writing should have been reined in by a more hands-on editor. Speaking of editing, there are a few howlers that should not have made it into the book (reign for rein, who's for whose come to mind). To describe the characters as one-dimensional would be to invite charges of dimensional exaggeration. The book is set in Southeast Asia, but it could have been anywhere as there is a complete lack of local colour. I received a complimentary copy of this book in order to review it

I thought that The Defector, by Mark Chisnell, was good but this, I think, is even better. No shortage of action, well drawn charecters and very plausible and timely plot. I could feel myself involved in the action. Like his first book,it would make a fantastic film.

Phillip Hamnet finally made his way to the cabin where his heavily pregnant wife, Anna was waiting with dinner. Phil was captain of the MV Shawould, but it was his last voyage before the birth of the twins they were anxiously waiting to welcome into their lives; Anna had joined her husband as it would be their last time to enjoy being a couple for quite some time.

When he received a call to return to the bridge only minutes later, he was annoyed. But his second in command sounded strange; something was wrong. So promising Anna he would return shortly, he made his way up to find out what the problem was. He was confronted with the worst thing a sea captain could
imagine - piracy struck his vessel that night in the South China Sea and Phil's life would never be the same again.

The evil and vicious Janac with his band of mercenaries had resurrected the practice of piracy on the high seas to fund their ongoing drug trade, and the loss of life and ships was increasing. That night though, they hadn't reckoned on Phillip Hamnet escaping their clutches, but to his horror they took Anna hostage - the ensuing race against time would test everything Hamnet had ever known, every essence of right and wrong he had ever learned. Would Phil ever see his beloved wife again? Would his twins survive the horror being inflicted on their mother?

This psychological thriller grabbed me right from the very beginning. The pace was intense, the plot twists absolutely gripping. I thoroughly enjoyed my first book by this author, and have no hesitation in highly recommending it to all thriller lovers.

Really enjoyed this - will be going back to read more from Mark Chisnell. Among other things, he actually understands what constitutes piracy and set his novel in southeast Asia. This will most assuredly keep your attention from start to finish, and the ending is not what you will expect.

Man, this one took off like a falcon.

Pirates hobble and loot a freighter in the South china sea. The pirate leader (Janac) captures the Captains (Hamnett) pregnant wife, and offers a deal- keep quiet about them, and the wife will be released in four days. This sets the stage for a thrill ride, of betrayal, intrigue and almost superhuman struggle as the deposed Hamnett attempts to rescue her.

CHaracterization, dialogue, and narrative all first rate and help to hold your interest. The author's background and familiarity with the marine shipping industry is a huge plus and lends authenticity to this tale.

Only quibble is it ended a bit abruptly after the crescendo scene between Janac and Hamnett. Would have like a breif conclusion to some of the minor story lines. But, that is a minor quibble.

This is a great story. Hope the author does well and continues to produce.
