Bruder is a career master thief, an apex predator hijacker who takes what he wants from people who would never turn to the cops for help. His jobs are planned down to the second, pulled off with a professional crew he knows and trusts.
And all of that doesn’t mean a damn thing when the plan makes first contact with the job...
When Bruder sees the chance to steal a couple million in untraceable Wall Street bonus cash, he moves fast to scout the job and put the crew and plan together.
But the money belongs to a group of people you don’t steal from—ever. The heist turns into a bloody killing ground, testing loyalties and pushing Bruder’s abilities and instincts to the brink. And whoever holds the money will owe a debt that must be paid in blood, a debt telling Bruder exactly how much his life is worth.
The Wrench is the first book in the gritty Bruder Heist Novels. If you like professional hard case criminals with a relentless focus on pulling off the job and getting away with it, join the crew and buckle up.

Usually the planning sections of heist novels drag worse than a tortoise climbing uphill through a river of molasses, but not here; the author kept the plot moving at a steady clip and nimbly dodged anything resembling boredom. The characters aren't given any extensive backstories but they are fleshed out enough that they're not just hollow ciphers from How To Write Hardboiled 101.
The 2nd half of the book, the post-heist portion, is where the tension really cranks up. When things don't go as planned due to the titular "wrench" in the system, our anti-hero protagonist Bruder swings into action and you'll be flipping pages as fast as possible to find out what happens next. Bruder is a blunt force instrument who only cares about the money, but shows occasional hints of humanity to prevent him from being a full-blown a-hole.
Bottom line, The Wrench launches the Bruder series with grit and greatness. Heist/crime novel fans should consider this one a score not to be missed.
Classic crime rules apply:
If you're a novice, you'll end up dead
If you go on Instagram, you'll be tossed from the car (2 stars for this alone for me)
The person you rob, it's seldom their money
And, your team, may always have their own agendas
Great read and starting book 2 tonight once work finishes up
