Endorsed by the likes of Dan Gable ("Incredible reading!"), Mark Johnson ("Mike Chapman, the best writer in the history of the sport"), and Tom Brands ("a very motivational book"), I've been blown away by this book's motivating lessons of heroic battles and character building on the mat. This is a terrific book for fans, coaches, and wrestlers looking for inspiration and the techniques, tactics, and lessons for developing the X-factor for success.

It's great to have a book focusing on a sport from which participants and fans can learn so many of life's great lessons. Courageous stories from the Olympic, collegiate, and high school ranks ranging from icons like Dan Gable to underdogs like Kyle Maynard and Nick Ackerman are intertwined with tales about Muhammad Ali, Dick Butkus, Michael Jordan, Lance Armstrong and many others to reveal that one's heart and mind hold the keys to success in life. Wrestling's demands (hard work, dedication, discipline, making sacrifices, and moving past setbacks) yield wrestling's rewards (character, confidence, mental toughness and the ability to face adversity) both on and off the mat. Recommended!

I really enjoyed the material in the book. It had lots of great wrestling history written into it as well as achievements of other great sports athletes. It was motivating and provided great insight into what mental toughness is. It shows how it is involved in every successful athletes sport. I read this book to my 8 year old son. He didn't get all of it but he enjoyed some of the stories of the historical matches and things to do with the sport of wrestling. It is an awesome book to have in our library.

I just bought this book and read the first 5 chapters. So far, it is very inspiring and give stories of willing yourself to win, and what it take to seperate your self from the average person. Examples site stories of NCAA and Olympic wrestlers, Iowa Hawkeyes wrestling program/ Dan Gable, UFC fighters like Dan Severn, Matt Hughes, Randy Couture, etc.

I've just started wrestling in my 40's. I did Judo and Jiu Jitsu in my 30's and Kickboxing/Kung Fu in my 20's. This is not only a great book to read and get pumped up before heading out to the gym, but I've recommitted to strive to be the best in my career and family life as well.

This book bridged the gap for us between the world of sports psychology and how big name wrestlers win at the mind game. The goal of this book is to teach how others have learned to dominate mentally on the mat. My son benefited from learning the "mind sets" of actual successful wrestlers in many, if not all, the various situations in which he was dealing. As a hands on learner, when a book like Wrestling Tough can demonstrate the implementation of good sports psychology theory by top wrestlers he knew of, and weave it into interesting stories and examples, it all sinks in better for the reader. It's one thing to try and teach a teenager sports psychology theories and quite another to relate it with how people they know and can relate to use these principles.

Unfortunately for my son, he hates to read. Therefore, I took careful time to condense the most relative and powerful theories of this book, knowing what would interest and work for him, and put them in short segments in a creative format (text and email) that worked for him. With the way the chapters are set up in logical order, I simply worked with condensing a couple chapters each week beginning in November and worked through them to February. Oddly enough, when injury came calling on my son during the season, the chapter on dealing with adversity was the topic of that week. As with good training and peaking at the right time, I used this books last few chapters(13-18) to help him peak from a mental standpoint. It all worked masterfully.

From making it to the final match in his first appearance at state, I credit much of his mental toughness from what was learned and implemented from this book.

As a person trying to climb to the top in my own sport, this book is perfect for us athletes. I have always thought I trained decently hard, but now I see I have my work cut out for me. Wrestlers are modern day gladiators, it seems to me that no one is as tough as these guys, and the readings for Wrestling Tough will prove that from Ed Banach's story going for his third NCAA title, to John Smiths triumps with broken fingers, seperated rib cartilages. This is an awesome book, and it is one of my favorite books.
We might not know what hard work is, but this book certainly puts us on the right track to finding out just what hard work truly is.
