I only wish there had been a book like this when I was penning tomes to my boss or starting out as a freelance writer. It would have shaved off years of learning by trial and error and eliminated many sleepless nights and nail-biting days!
Sawyers shares examples, showing copy before and after editing and explaining the rationale for the edits. There's enough info on grammar, punctuation, and style to help you - but not enough to discourage you.
To make the learning stick, she includes work sheets that guide you through the principles discussed. Use them over and over again and your writing will be more effective - and more fun for both you and your readers.
I think everyone needs a copy of Write Like You Talk - to help them to take the pain out of the writing process, to help get their ideas flowing, and to make self-editing more intuitive.
Barb's advice is spot on -- know your audience, and write like you talk. Like YOU talk. Not someone else.
The worksheets are a very practical addition that can help readers to put Barb's advice into action.
I took notes while read through the book only to be pleasantly surprised that Barb had complied everything I needed to know into summarized worksheets. I can't wait to get started using her methods. I can already see that this book is going to make my blog posts more effective.
Thank you, Barb!
You'll want to keep this book as a handy reference for your daily writing requirements, and you might even want to give it to others whose writing could use a little boost.
