Unlike other authors who write how to do it books (I’ve written three myself), James takes the time to abolish the major stumbling blocks that often face beginning novelists. Best of all, Write Your Novel is a crystal clear plan of specifics. James leads the reader with clear-cut assignments. She also uses her own excellent novels to illustrate important points about the writing craft, showing how she applied her own advice to writing.
A priceless feature at the end of each chapter is what she calls an Action Plan with tangible steps readers can get started on directly. She lists and explains current tools available to assist novelists. In addition, James includes a list of online sites (links included) and other resources for readers writing their first novel.
This is a very enlightening book, even for those, like myself, who have already written books. The book will help push people who think they want to write a novel to get off their duff and do it. Her book is exceptional because of her caring, emotional approach to building self-confidence and disabling the inhibitions to getting started. The book’s advice is obviously resulting from Maggie James own writing journey. I especially like the chapters “Ditch the excuses,” “Planning and preparation,” and “Dealing with procrastination.”
The book makes you feel like Maggie is your best friend with accumulated knowledge about writing novels, which she is glad to share with you. She obviously really wants to help. James discusses the lack of confidence and criticism most new author fear and how to seek out positive support. Her tone was encouraging throughout.
I like that Maggie James stresses solid ways to get it done. The book is a full of hints and tips that will help aspiring authors. Written in a friendly supportive way, the author speaks from experience as she encourages new authors through each stage of completing their first novel.
I know whereof I speak in the high praise I give Maggie James and her excellent book. I was America’s first online writing teacher (on America Online) and I spent a decade teaching 4,125 students from all over the USA how to write their first novel. Like Maggie, my published novels are all suspense. As a fellow teacher of novel writing, I wholeheartedly recommend Write Your Novel! From Getting Started to First Draft.
I wish Write Your Novel had been available when I started writing five years ago. The information in Write Your Novel would have saved me time, trouble, and money. For the aspiring writer, Write Your Novel can jump start your writing dreams.
The author’s step-by-step, detailed approach puts the beginning author at the front door of writing, publishing, and marketing. Maggie James takes time to eliminate, one by one, the major stumbling blocks beginning writers often face. James uses a wide variety of quotes from others who have successively started their writing journey. I found this section full of inspiration and motivation.
Write Your Novel is a crystal clear blueprint or guide of specifics. The author leads the reader with “what to do next” assignments that are clear-cut and easy to understand. James follows her own advice and counsel. She practices what she preaches in Write Your Novel as evidenced in James’s popular psychological thrillers. Additionally, James uses her own writing (novels) to illustrate certain important points related to the writing craft and how she applied her own advice. The author shares openly professional and personal hurdles from her ongoing writing journey. All “writing secrets” are on the table.
An invaluable feature at the end of each chapter is an Action Plan chocked full of concrete steps readers can get started on immediately. This component alone is priceless!
James takes the reader behind-the-scenes as she lists and explains the current “tools of the trade” available to assist the would-be novelist. By sharing her thoughts on the “usefulness” of what’s on the market, readers will be able to make quicker and better decisions regarding what will work best for them.
In addition, the author includes a list of online sites (links included) and other resources for readers to consider in preparing to write those first words, paragraphs, and pages of their first novel.
If you’re serious about writing your first novel, follow the action steps in Writing Your Novel, and you’ll publish your first novel sooner than you thought possible! I’ve been writing for over five years, and I found additional ways to improve my own writing from reading Maggie James’s Writing Your Novel.
Five-stars for Write Your Novel!
The Chapters progress through “Ditch the excuses,” “Planning and preparation,” “Finding help and support,” “Dealing with procrastination,” to my favorite, “Improve your writing,” a must for novice writers learning the craft. It includes a primer on the important steps following completion of the manuscript, namely editing, publishing and marketing, and provides resources for further reading to improve language and creative writing skills, plotting, and other areas involved in writing, editing, publishing, and marketing a novel.
Anyone who has wanted to write, but lacked the confidence or wherewithal to get started, “Write Your Novel” will not only encourage and guide you in taking that critical first step, but also provides the steps to get you across the finish line.
