I'm about to move from writing nonfiction to publishing my first piece of short fiction. In order to get my work ready, I've been devouring as much as I can get my hands on about writing fiction. Allen suggests writing in shorter paragraphs, and while I've heard that over and over for electronic publishing, it's nice for a print writer to admit that long blocks of text can be downright annoying.
One thing that I really enjoyed reading was Allen's quick journey through the history of commercial publishing. He uses it to argue that modern writers should write in terms of "scenes," and cut long- winded descriptions of setting and characters that pre- television and movie readers were more than willing to set through.
