I've been involved in the marketing space in one fashion or another for a number of years now. One of the ideas I've seen spread around (and absolutely can't stand) is that virtually anyone can enter any niche or category, regardless of their knowledge of that subject/niche. It's a commonly said/spread idea that if you read two books on a topic, you'll know more than 80% of the people interested in that topic. Thus, BOOM - you're an instant expert.
This is such unadulterated crap. This idea is why there are so many lousy and useless products (of all kinds - reports, books, courses, videos, programs, etc) in so many areas.
Nancy tackled this almost immediately, stating how the "quick and dirty" route will lead to nothing but "dead ends". I like that.
When I learn something new, I like to learn from someone that is obviously smarter than I am. Preferably, I want to learn from someone who has genuine experience in and has been successful at what they're teaching me. Nancy has and is both.
Her method is simple, straight-forward, and actionable. It's not magic, and will take work. However, anything worth doing will result in some work, so you should have expected that.
I don't like to try and argue about opinions online (because noone ever wins when that happens), but there's a 2-star review on this book that states that it "Needed more Amazon-specific information" and "Shows would-be authors how to do the bare minimum to get a book on Kindle", implying that the book was deficient. I would have to respectfully disagree.Read more ›
The book covers a lot of topics about writing but what struck me the most was the part where the author introduced herself. You surely will not find that in any other similar type of book. It made me feel reassured that whatever I am about to read comes from someone who knows what she's talking about, making the topics more believable and do-able.
This is a great book to read if you're interested in writing, if writing is already your passion or if you're someone who wants to take a peek on what it would take to write. It's still going to be informative anyway and most of the concepts you can apply to anything that involves writing.
Well, out of simple curiosity, I read the "look inside" preview and saw something that intrigued me. And, of course, the preview cut it off before I got to the juicy stuff.
So, I bought it.
Frankly, this is brilliant. It's not that the general plan is terribly original. It's not.
However, how it's explained -- the author's exact tweaks to the process -- are what make it different and highly motivating. They're also really practical.
In addition, she mentioned a couple of resources I hadn't heard of (and some I'd heard of but never considered for research), and any one of those was worth the price of this book.
I'd say a lot more about this wonderful book, but -- to be perfectly honest -- I'm about to sit down and write an outline the way she recommends, because I am determined to complete my next book in 72 hours, or less!
This is a smart purchase if you're writing nonfiction and don't have a sleek, by-the-numbers approach to your research & writing process. (And, face it, if your existing system was that great, you wouldn't be considering this book and reading my review... right?)
