Write Now! 20 Simple Strategies for Successful Writing is the first book by Greg Strandberg that I have had the pleasure of reading. His style is very personal, with clearly reasoned arguments as needed for his points presented in clearly written text. Since he is writing about his work, the entire work is clearly first person as it should be, and this particular title focuses on how he believes you (the reader) can be a successful writer of your own work. This review will look at the overall content of the work, the credentials of Mr. Strandberg, an overview of his works, and my impression of this work and how it might provide help for aspiring authors.
Write Now! 20 Simple Strategies for Successful Writing looks at 20 strategies which Mr. Strandberg thinks are of primary importance, which will help aspiring authors as they work upon their craft with success measured by the work that they can sell to interested buyers. Finding them useful in his own work, Mr. Strandberg reviews each of his strategies as well as where you might find pitfalls or other issues that might be challenging for a novice writer. He tells the good and the bad he has found and why he feels that way. His writing is clear, concise, and consistently on-point with his topic. The writing is personal, just if he was talking directly with you about his thoughts, opinions, and ways to work with each strategy in turn. Most readers who strive to be authors will find something useful about each strategy; at least that is how I felt in my reading of this informative work.
Mr. Strandberg comes to this work with 59 books to his credit. These works are a mix of fiction, history as related to both Montana, his home state, as well as China, a country where he worked as an ESL teacher. His fiction works can be located in the genres of science fiction and thrillers. His nonfiction works look at history, teaching English as a Second Language (ESL), and writing with a clear focus on writing strategies for all writers, as well as helpful how-to works on getting e-book cover designs, self-publishing, strategies for marketing your work, and ideas on how to become a better writer. With almost 60 works to his credit, all published within the past three years or so, his writing may seem to be almost too prolific. In actuality he has been working on several of these works for sometime, but his focus on getting things published has actually taken off in the span of the last three years when most electronic publishing has become available with the simultaneous influx of various reading devices for use with electronic books of various formats. His writing tips and suggestions do focus clearly on the electronic book markets, with particular emphasis on both Google and Amazon.
Write Now! 20 Simple Strategies for Successful Writing looks at the top ideas that have helped Mr. Strandberg with his own writing. He writes as if you and he were talking about these topics with an almost conversation between the imagined you and him at the keyboard writing his copy as he thinks of this conversation and how it progresses. His ideas are cogent, on-point, and clearly based on a lot of personal experience about which he is at times quite passionate. He is always informative and clearly has the reader's interest as his focal point. He wants you to know what he has learned, both good and bad, and how he was able to work around things if necessary, and what things to know about (and perhaps avoid) in your own quest as a writer and self-publisher.
Write Now! 20 Simple Strategies for Successful Writing is a good book about writing strategies. I think it has more appeal to a young adult audience, although his use of vocabulary and writing style can be engaged at just about any level where the reader has sufficient background knowledge of English mechanics and usage as well as a fund of knowledge and a grasp of English mechanics, usage, and style that would allow the reader to work toward becoming a writer of print material. His ideas are based on his experience which is broad and his interests which are also varied. He does not pull any punches on things that are potential barriers to your efforts as a writer. He does provide helpful suggestions throughout so that you can profit from his experience hopefully avoiding obvious pitfalls which may not be so obvious to the initiate.
I highly recommend this book to any reader who can understand the concepts and vocabulary. There is very little in the way of adult content with the possible exception of a word here and there, and such content is very rare. Young adults and older will probably have the most success with understanding and profiting from this work. I highly recommend it, as I have learned a great deal to help with my own efforts at writing. If you want to write as a career, this book is a short, but clearly a must read. You will find it most helpful, so much so, that I am happy to provide it a five star rating. It clearly deserves it!
Definitely recommend this book to new writer and especially "writers" who have been told by the marketing Gurus that writing isn't important when it comes to ... um writing.
