In general, reading a Cecelia Munzenmaier book on writing is a two-for-one deal. You get the best of current scholarship whittled down to best practices presented with memorable examples and contrast. But the real plus is reading writing that serves to model precision and simplicity. Munzenmaier’s books are meaty with content and yet simple to follow.
When I get wordy and complicated, I return to Munzenmaier’s books to refresh my mind on how simply something complex can be expressed. I know you will find this also.
In each chapter of Writing to be Understood, Munzenmaier gives the links to valuable references, “Check Yourself” insights for your own revisions and citations for the supporting material. I especially like the resource examples like www.plainlanguage.gov where you can find lists of simple words and phrases. Noting there are lists of pretentious words and phrases, Munzenmaier suggests taking a manageable three words or phrases that you are using and “make a conscious effort to eliminate them.” She goes on to suggest a way to strengthen future writing, but I’ll let you discover where she goes from here.
I particularly like chapter five, “Make your Sentences Sticky.” The “time to live” in a reader’s brain is brief these days. You have to make the most of that moment of attention. Munzenmaier has put together a tight set of strategies to help you gain and keep attention so your message may have greater impact. This is key in a world of informational overload.
I highly recommend Writing to be Understood. I wish someone had given it to me as a graduation gift from high school so I would have an easier time in my college composition classes.
One aspect of the book that I didn't expect but appreciate is that the author included numerous links to resources for deeper reading about why the tips work. Teachers and students of writing will likely appreciate those links and the insights they offer.
