In supporting his project, Lanoue offers insightful discussions of many of Issa's haiku. More than that, he includes numerous examples of contemporary poets (all of whose work I am familiar with and many of whom I know personally) "writing like Issa," surely the best way to show how to accept what Issa offers without losing contact with one's own time and with oneself.
The book is a pleasure to read. I'd say it may appeal most strongly to poets who are in the process of moving beyond the beginner stage, But I can't imagine anyone who loves haiku not enjoying and learning from it. Write like Issa to discover who you can be.
